<h3>Middle School students from Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy in East Flatbush will be joined by established local poet Joshua Mehigan for a reading, conversation, and reception to celebrate the launch of their inspiring poetry collection Where I Live, which reflects on issues of homelessness and migration.</h3> <h3>About the book</h3>This spring brings in a new collection of poetry by an inspiring group of middle school students from Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy, located along Tilden Avenue in East Flatbush. The collection is entitled Where I Live and contains over seventy poems that can be described by the poets themselves as, “concerning, dynamic and fabulous.” The book initially began from a round-table discussion among the children on the issues of homelessness and migration. Many of the voices within this book originate from outside of the United States, which is one of the many gifts this little book has to offer, reflecting how these issues are not only perceived but also lived and experienced by these new voices emerging from East Flatbush. <h3>About Joshua Mehigan</h3>Joshua Mehigan’s most recent book of poems, Accepting the Disaster (FSG), was cited in the Times Literary Supplement, New York Times Book Review, and elsewhere as a best book of 2015. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Poetry, which awarded him its 2013 Levinson Prize, and he has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and NEA. From 2017 to 2020, he taught poetry at Northwestern University. He has lived in Brooklyn for thirty-three years.
