2024 Cultural Heritage Symposium: Coastal Archaeological Heritage in the Caribbean Basin

VIRTUAL REGISTRATIONCoastal sites are essential for understanding human history and are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, including sea-level rise, ocean wave height variability, and changing weather patterns. The significant threat that climate change poses to coastal archaeological sites globally, emphasizes the urgent need for new strategies in public archaeology and cultural resource management. This symposium aims to connect French, American and Indigenous researchers, academics, and cultural resource managers to exchange ideas and practices around preserving coastal cultural heritage threatened by climate change. The discussions will highlight examples where partnerships and community engagement in public archeology are essential in making heritage management relevant to a wider population, gathering meaningful data, and building collective resilience in coastal heritage.The symposium will bring together teams working in different areas and legal frameworks to discuss how they have been addressing these issues from a variety of perspectives and traditions.Common issues relating to coastal cultural heritage threatened by climate change:1) national or regional policies implemented to address coastal cultural heritage threatened by climate change.2) the role of scientists and research projects dedicated to coastal cultural heritage threatened by climate change.3) the role of mediation actions and structures, as well as communities through citizen and participatory sciences, regional narratives, and decision-making.This is hosted by the Deering Estate, Deering Estate Foundation, Consulate general of France in Miami, French Ministry of Culture - Villa Albertine and Florida Public Archeology Network.Partners include: France Florida Foundation for the Arts.

The role of scientists and research projects dedicated to coastal cultural heritage threatened by climate change: Caribbean and South Florida archaeologists, these researchers and projects dedicated to coastal cultural heritage threatened by climate change play a crucial role in understanding, documenting, and preserving these vulnerable sites - to assess impacts, develop strategies for mitigating, and to advocate for the protection of cultural heritage sites at risk of erosion, inundation, or destruction. These efforts contribute not only to the preservation of cultural heritage but also to the broader understanding of the interconnectedness between human societies, the environment, and climate change.

Tina Marie Osceola, a strategic thinker and dedicated defender of tribal sovereignty, currently serves as the Executive Director of Operations of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. With a background in Political Science and Public Administration, Osceola's multifaceted role includes acting as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) and Director of the Tribal Historic Preservation Office. Her commitment to her community extends beyond administrative duties; she is also deeply involved in initiatives such as the No More Stolen Ancestors campaign, advocating for the return of Seminole ancestral remains from institutions like the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Osceola's leadership and advocacy have been instrumental in raising awareness about tribal rights and ensuring Seminole voices are heard in projects like Everglades restoration, marking significant milestones in the tribe's legacy.

Hosted by Mellon-funded FIU Commons for Justice Project, focusing on "Collaborating with Indigenous and Other Marginalized Groups: How to Involve or Begin a Project with Meaningful Consultation." In this interactive session, we will explore the essential principles and practical strategies for engaging with Indigenous and marginalized communities in a respectful and equitable manner. Led by experts in community engagement and cultural sensitivity, this workshop will provide participants with the tools and insights needed to foster genuine collaboration, build trust, and ensure that projects are grounded in the priorities and perspectives of the communities they serve. Whether you're an educator, researcher, activist, or community member, this workshop offers valuable guidance for fostering inclusive and impactful partnerships. Join us as we strive to create a more just and equitable future together.

40 years of archeological investigations and sea level rise at Deering Estate Cultural and Ecological Heritage Site: Three teams of 20-30 guests are invited to go on an expert led hike throughout the Deering Estate. Please note that it can be rocky, difficult terrain. Comfortable closed-toe hiking shoes are REQUIRED. We recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt and long pants and bringing reusable water bottle, sun protection and insect repellant.

The role of mediation structures and actions, the involvement of communities in terms of citizen and participatory sciences. There is an intricate web of mediation structures and actions that facilitate meaningful engagement between researchers, communities, and cultural heritage sites. Using best practices, panelists unravel the complexities of citizen and participatory sciences, exploring how these approaches empower communities to become active stewards of their own heritage. From grassroots initiatives to large-scale collaborative projects, we'll examine the transformative impact of community involvement on archaeological research and cultural resource management.

Dr. Isabel Rivera-Collazo is a pioneering figure in the field of marine archaeology and ecological adaptations to climate change. As the Director of the Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology and an Assistant Professor at the University of California San Diego, Dr. Rivera-Collazo's research transcends disciplinary boundaries, encompassing archaeology, archaeomalacology, and marine ecology. With a keen focus on understanding the dynamic interactions between human activity and island ecosystems over time, her work sheds light on the profound impacts of climate change on coastal heritage. Through applied research and community engagement, Dr. Rivera-Collazo and her team are at the forefront of efforts to safeguard cultural and ecological resilience in the face of environmental challenges.

DAY 2: Keynote Speaker

Xavier Cortada is a Cuban-American artist working across disciplines to engage communities. His work intends to generate awareness and action around climate change, sea level rise, and biodiversity loss. Based in Miami, he has created art at the North and South poles to address environmental concerns at every point in between, as well as across 6 continents, including more than 150 public artworks, installations, collaborative murals and socially engaged projects. The crux of Cortada’s work finds itself rooted in a deep conceptual engagement of his participants. In 2006, he pioneered eco-art in Miami with his “Reclamation Project,” a participatory mangrove reforestation effort. In 2018, Cortada created the “Underwater Homeowners Association” to help Miamians understand their vulnerability to rising seas.
