Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program has been “giving back to the bays” since 1985. As regional leaders in all aspects of coastal and marine research and restoration on Long Island, we have been able to make significant progress in enhancing the health of our local waterways. Through the Back to the Bays Initiative we work at the community level with local supporters and stewards to provide meaningful opportunities for involvement in this important work.

Tiana Horseshoe Crab Monitoring

Join us at Tiana Bayside Facility in Hampton Bays, to monitor horseshoe crabs as part of a state-wide effort, in partnership with the DEC, Stony Brook, and CCE Marine Program.

Horseshoe Crabs have been around for over 450 million years! And we have come to rely on them. Any vaccine or medical implant must be tested with a compound found in horseshoe crab blood to detect the presence of bacteria.Join us in a state-wide effort to monitor their population and inform policy that will help sustain their population for generations to come.Back to the Bays, an initiative of CCE Marine Program, oversees the monitoring of horseshoe crabs at the Tiana Bayside site, coordinated by Daniell Morris. How to prepare:<ul><li>Dress for the weather, rain or shine (only thunderstorms may cause cancellations)</li><li>Wear waders or tall boots, or water shoes when water is warm enough</li><li>Extra flashlights and headlamps are helpful</li><li>Instructions, data sheets, clip boards, and tools are provided</li></ul>

<h3>Tiana Bayside Schedule</h3>

Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program and Stony Brook University are working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to coordinate and implement this project.The intent of this network is to encourage participants to get involved with our annual horseshoe crab monitoring program on various reference beaches throughout New York’s Marine District.
