Michigan Tech Enterprise Corporation (MTEC) SmartZone is one of 20 SmartZones in the State of Michigan. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization directed by theMichigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), their mission is to accelerate high-tech businesses growth in the region. Since 2003, MTEC SmartZone has created over 700 high-tech jobs in the Houghton/Hancock area.

Speakers Heather Mosher, Jody Johnson, and Emily Rucker will focus on the process-driven and risk-mitigation side of venture development including insurance, legal, and accounting.The overall goal of this panel is to highlight the very real risks of doing business. Starting a company is no small feat, and especially at the earliest stages, many factors can cause a startup to fail. The expertise of the speakers highlights specific industries often overlooked in the glamorization of startups, but often highlight their greatest weaknesses.The structure will be an hour-long panel with moderator questions, followed by questions from the audience. This will be broadcast virtually and open to the public to attend in person.About HeatherHeather Mosher is a Michigan native from Iron Mountain. She graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. Heather has been employed with VAST (now Acrisure) since graduating. She has held both a Property/Casualty and Life/Health license since 2008. She also holds her Accident and Health Counselor license. She received her Certified Insurance Service Representative designation in 2009 and in 2013 became certified in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. She has previously served as a longtime officer on the board of the Marquette Noon Kiwanis Club and is a past board member of Connect Marquette Young Professionals group. In addition to that, Heather currently serves on the Marquette County Ambassadors board, the Northern Michigan University College of Business Advisory board as well as the Upper Peninsula Human Resource Association board. She is also a member of the internal Advisory Council for Acrisure Great Lakes Region, Marquette office.About JodyJody is certified in Organizational Behavior Management, Jody has a broad skillset that includes marketing, wealth management and shareholder functions, and 15 years in key human resource functions. From Fortune 50 powerhouses to emerging startups and non-profit endeavors, Jody translates her expertise to meet the unique needs of a diverse array of clients. Her advisory services place special emphasis on hiring strategy, talent attraction, and acquisition. Jody’s insights have illuminated the path for her clients, guiding them to assemble teams that not only possess the requisite skills, but also align with the organization’s culture and aspirations. A thriving organization is one that harmonizes its people, processes, and objectives.About EmilyCommercial litigator Emily Rucker focuses on construction and supply chain matters. She represents automotive suppliers and other manufacturers in a variety of supply chain matters including pricing, breach of contract and contract termination matters. In the construction industry, she supports owners, contractors, subcontractors and material suppliers in resolving a variety of disputes, including construction lien and payment claims and defect and delay matters. Although many of her clients are based primarily in Michigan, she does venture across state lines to handle cases nationwide.In addition, Emily brings to her practice significant experience in bankruptcy and insolvency litigation, helping clients prosecute and defend fraudulent transfer preference claims and other contested matters in bankruptcy.Providing creative solutions both in and out of the courtroom, Emily helps clients assess the risks and benefits in going to trial or in seeking alternative dispute resolution. Her emphasis, however, is on preventing battles in the first place, and she always looks ahead to best position clients to avoid conflicts down the road.Emily brings excellent writing and oral advocacy skills to her practice, as well as an ease and comfort in trial and a natural ability to connect with judges and juries.
