Equal Sound strives to introduce listeners to new music by breaking down the traditional confines of musical genres. As advocates for “classical” music, Equal Sound is dedicated to the idea that all music is created equal. Equal Sound curates experiences that illuminate the threads between classical music and other genres to attract and engage new audiences from all musical worlds.

Equal Sound is hosting our first Sunday matinee on March 1 at Civic Center Studios in downtown Los Angeles! Featuring The Furies and ~NoisThe FuriesThe Furies is a contemporary violin duo whose mission is to bring intersectional feminism into the concert hall through immersive performance experiences that challenge their audience and community, for them to learn more about the histories of womxn in a white male dominated canon, and to encourage audience members to demand more diverse programming from their musical institutions. Since their premiere in winter of 2018, the artist-run duo (Maiani da Silva and Kate Outterbridge) has performed at several distinctive festivals and series across the U.S., most notably as featured artists of The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. At the Detroit Institute of Arts, they performed alongside Eighth Blackbird. The duo has also performed in the Hot Air Festival, Equal Sound, Light Box, Third Place Concert Series, and Oh My Ears (2018-19). Future performances include Scholes Street Studios and Spectrum in New York, and Tuesdays at Monkspace and Equal Sound in Los Angeles. The Furies’ individual and collective eclectic musical identities, incorporated with elements of theatre and performance art, has led them to develop their uniquely interdisciplinary approach to performance and programming. Not ones to shy away from the comfort of their primary instruments, The Furies performs and arranges works which include improvisation, singing/speaking, percussion, movement, and live-processing electronics, among others. Their repertoire ranges from artists with academic backgrounds like Olga Neuwirth, and Anna Clyne, to works by more unconventional and alternative artists such as Eve Beglarian, Elizabeth A. Baker, Bjork, Jennifer Walshe and avant-garde bossa nova/electro-acoustic Brazilian legend Jocy de Oliveira. ~Nois~Nois is a Chicago-based saxophone quartet that defies categorization by working between the boundary of contemporary classical music and experimental improvisation. Founded in 2016, ~Nois (pronounced "noise") has quickly emerged as one of the premier young ensembles in the United States. Known for their “masterclass-level demonstrations of precise articulations and glowing legatos” (I Care if You Listen), “truly innovative musicianship,” and “raw creativity” (Cacophony Magazine), ~Nois has been awarded prizes at prestigious chamber music competitions including the Second Prize in the Open Division of the 2018 M-Prize International Chamber Arts Competition and the Silver Medal at the 2017 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.In addition to regular concerts in its home of Chicago, ~Nois actively tours across the United States with appearances at festivals such as Big Ears, the Continuum Music Festival, the Re:Sound Festival, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and Omaha Under the Radar. The quartet had the honor of being one of three guest artists for the University of Chicago’s inaugural season of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition. ~Nois is in demand as a guest artist and lecturer at universities across the nation with residencies and performances at institutions such as the University of Colorado - Boulder, the Manhattan School of Music, and Princeton University. Dedicated to expanding and redefining the saxophone quartet repertoire, ~Nois has premiered over 30 pieces including works by 2019 Gaudeamus Prize winner Kelley Sheehan and 2018 Guggenheim Fellow Tonia Ko. The quartet has performed with the Bang On A Can All-Stars, Claire Chase, Eighth Blackbird, and indie rock band My Brightest Diamond.
