How do factors such as demographic representation and issue framing in traditional news and digital media affect fundamental components of democracy such as political participation, public opinion, and civil rights protections? What steps can be taken to counteract issues such as media bias and under-representation of minoritized communities?Join us for an interactive panel discussion with media scholars and practitioners on the many important intersections of media diversity and democracy. He is completing a documentary about the unsolved murder of Alex Odeh, a Palestinian-American activist, in 1985. His next book is about Odeh and Arab American media citizenship.Leanna Garfield (she/they) is the Social Media Safety Program Manager at GLAAD, where she monitors, documents, and escalates anti-LGBTQ online hate speech, harassment, and disinformation. Leanna comes to GLAAD from Access Now, where she led its global digital engagement work and campaigns focusing on Big Tech accountability. Previously, they worked as a reporter for Business Insider, covering the societal impacts of technology. Their work has been featured in Tech Policy Press, The World Economic Forum, Inc, Entrepreneur, Slate, CBS, and elsewhere. She is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School at Syracuse University and is based in Brooklyn, NYAmalia Cordova is the supervisory museum curator and chair of research and education for the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian Institution. She is a filmmaker, curator and scholar specializing in Indigenous screen culture. She is a former Latin American specialist for the Film + Video Center of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, has served as Assistant Director of New York University’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and taught at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and at Tisch School of the Arts. She has published extensively on Latin American Indigenous film and video, and on the circulation of Indigenous cinema.Dr. Tamara Gilkes Borr is the US policy correspondent of The Economist. She previously worked as a public school teacher in New York City and as a management consultant focused on public sector and social impact projects. She earned a PhD in education from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from New York University.
