Earth Day iNaturalist Walk

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. Free tours offer insights into ongoing development and unmatched views, and recreational programs provide opportunities to experience the hills and waterways before the park officially opens.

Join us for a 2+ mile Nature Walk at Freshkills Park and help us with an iNaturalist Project: measuring biodiversity on East Mound!

Come celebrate Earth Day at Freshkills Park!Freshkills Park staff will take you behind the scenes to visit areas that are currently closed to the public. On this 2+ mile walk, we will measure biodiversity on East Mound through insect netting, binocular viewing, and recording our finds on iNaturalist.This tour is donation-based and we suggest a $10 donation per participant, but we understand everyone is in a different position to give and thank you for whatever you can. Your donation supports the education, programming, and research at the Freshkills Park Alliance and makes programs like this possible.Accessibility: This tour will be an approximately 2+ mile walk. The roads themselves can be uneven at times. If you have any accessibility needs, please let us know in advance so we can best accommodate you.Your ticket admits 1 car. All participants must provide their own car that will stay on-site the whole time. Participants may not use a bicycle, taxi or ride-share service due to ongoing construction. During registration you will be asked about additional participants in your car. Due to limited reservations, carpooling with friends and family is encouraged. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.Plan Ahead: Be “tick aware” and “weather aware.” Wear appropriate clothing, including close-toed shoes and sunscreen. Stay hydrated and make sure to bring water with you. All participants will be asked to sign an activity waiver before entering the park. Those under 18 need to have the waiver signed by a parent or guardian and be accompanied by an adult.Download the App: Download iNaturalist and set up an account.
