And parents! It’s that time again! The Children’s Cinema returns to Light Industry with another fun-filled program of short subjects, assembled with the junior cinephile in mind and featuring no shortage of dancing animals, vivid colors, wondrous inventions, and kooky capers. For this session, kids will see the classic Steamboat Willie, now in the public domain and liberated from the Disney vault. Though not the first cartoon with synchronized sound (the Fleischer Brothers, for instance, had already made a number of films using the Phonofilm system earlier in the 20s), Steamboat Willie did mark the debut of Mickey Mouse, who whistled his way into history as “the only unpaid movie star.” They’ll also see Alan Ohashi’s captivating Kites and Other Tales, a visit with master kite maker Tom Joe, who shows off his creations and shares stories about his craft from Asian history and folklore. Lidia García Millán’s Color is a living painting in motion—and one of the first experimental films made by a Latin American woman—set to music by Montevideo’s Hot Jazz Club ensemble. The afternoon concludes with Laurel and Hardy’s slapstick treasure The Music Box, in which Stan and Oliver play delivery men who struggle to move a hulking piano up an imposing flight of stairs, the occasion for an encyclopedia of perfect gags.
