Lecture outline: Loss of osseointegration may present with a range of clinical manifestations including peri-implant radiolucency and implant mobility. Timely identification of biologic problems around implants is essential to limit the progression of disease to complete loss of osseointegration. Failure of dental implants may have prosthetic implications such a need to modify or remake the implant-supported prosthesis. Understanding risk factors for implant failure will help clinicians prevent this complications as well as to understand when further implant treatment in a patient with a history of implant failure may or may not be appropriate.Course Objectives:<ul><li>to define implant success and failure</li><li>to describe identification of implant failures and other biologic complications including multiple implant failures (cluster phenomenon)</li><li>to outline methods of preventing implant failures and implant related complications</li><li>to review strategies to manage implant failures</li><li>to understand prosthodontic implications of late implant failures including possible modifications to prosthetic design</li></ul>Speaker bio: Dr. David Chvartszaid is both a Prosthodontist and a Periodontist. He is the director of the Graduate Prosthodontics Program at the University of Toronto and the dentist-in-chief at Baycrest Hospital.
