Join us for this film screening of a new mini-series pilot on Central American Labor History.Refreshments will be provided at this screening and discussion with screenwriter and historian, Jeffrey L. Gould in Social Sciences Building, Room 102 Based on actual events, Dawn to Despair tells the story of two generations of the Porras family in Alajuela, Costa Rica; a workingclass family crossed by tensions between political militancy and family ties in the context of the 1930s and 1940s.Jeffrey L. Gould is Distinguished Visiting Professor in the School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study and Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Indiana University. His most recent books are Entre el Bosque y Los Arboles: Utopías Menores en El Salvador y Uruguay– CALAS, Universidad de Guadalajara, 2021; Solidarity Under Siege, The El Salvadoran Labor Movement, 1970-1990, New York: Cambridge University Press, 2019 and Desencuentros y Desafíos: Ensayos Sobre la Historia Contemporánea Centroamericana, Editorial CIHAC, San Jose 2016. His most recent film is Port Triumph, 2019. He is currently working with Ernesto Jara on an historical drama, Dawn to Despair/Sombras al Amanecer.
