In the Candlelight Voyage, be transported to the furthest reaches of classical music's beauty. From the Baroque, to the joyful simplicity of the Classicalists, to the emotional depths of the Romantics and the surreal and existential questionings of the 20th and 21st centuries. Each evening will include personal introductions from the artists, as well as audience interaction with artists onstage.

About the Artists:

Missing Piece made up of Kelly Quesada & Dan Galat · resident ensemble

Shi-An Costello · artist-in-residence and curator

Kelly Quesada is a Chicago-based cellist who can be seen playing a range of styles, from experimental and new music, to Baroque performance practice, to free improvisation. In her early career, Quesada was selected as first prize winner and soloist of both the University of Oregon (2010) and the Baldwin-Wallace Youth Orchestra (2005) concerto competitions. Recently she appeared as soloist in the premiere of Griffin Candey’s cello concerto with CHAI Collaborative Ensemble. Currently active as both an orchestral and chamber musician, Kelly is co-founder of the ensemble Missing Piece and founding cellist of the Tuuli Quartet. Previously, Kelly was a member of the Eugene Symphony, founding member of the Delgani String Quartet, has toured as a member of the Portland Cello Project, and was principal cellist of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, where she was lucky to share the stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her extensive performance career, Kelly is also active as an educator, working with students privately and in groups, spanning all ages and levels. Kelly has studied cello with David Alan Harrell of the Cleveland Orchestra, Carlton McCreery at the University of Alabama, Steven Pologe at the University of Oregon, as well as Baroque cello with early music scholar Marc Vanscheeuwijck.

Dan Galat is a Chicago-based violinist and violist who is active as a chamber musician, orchestral musician and educator. He is a co-founding member of Missing Piece, an ensemble that has commissioned and premiered 14 new works in its first two years in concerts across the United States. Recently, Galat performed as violinist and violist in 24 performances of the premiere of critically acclaimed Illinoise at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Since moving to Chicago, Galat performs regularly with many organizations including Chicago Composers Orchestra (concertmaster), Fulcrum Point New Music Project, Illinois Philharmonic, Louisiana Philharmonic, Bach Cantata Vespers, Northwest Indiana Symphony, New Philharmonic, Ido Quartet, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
Galat received his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, receiving a Hoosier Presidential Scholarship and serving as a Music Theory Associate Instructor. While in Indiana, Galat served 5 seasons with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra as assistant concertmaster, and with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic as assistant principal second and concertmaster. Galat has studied with conductor and international soloist Joseph Swensen, Blaise Magniere of the Avalon Quartet, Desiree Ruhstrat of the Lincoln Trio, and Clara Takarabe, neuroscientist, arts activist and violist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
