<h2><strong>Creating a Safe Haven</strong></h2><h3>Presented by David Hanscom, MD</h3><p>The current definition of chronic pain is that it is, “.... an imbedded memory that becomes associated with more and more life experiences and the memory can’t be erased.” One result is sustained levels of stress hormones. The essence of the solution is connecting with your healing capacity and to feel safe. The workshop will presentrecent neuroscience data regarding the neurological nature of chronic pain and teach strategies that normalize the body’s chemistry.</p><p></p><h2><strong>Objectives:</strong></h2><ol><li>Delineate the neurochemical nature of anxiety.</li><li>Understand the underpinnings of why mental pain is considered a bigger problem than physical pain – anxiety is the pain.</li><li>Present practical tools to regulate your body’s chemistry – end result is feeling safe.</li><li>Practice techniques in small groups.</li><li>Understand the importance of learning to enjoy treating chronic pain.</li></ol><p></p><h2><strong>About the Presenter:</strong></h2><p><strong>Dr. David Hanscom</strong> is a retired orthopedic surgeon specializing in complex spine problems. Much of his practice is devoted to performing surgery on patients with failed spine surgeries. He practices at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, WA. He has published a book, Back in Control: A Surgeon’s Roadmap Out of Chronic Pain that is the basis of the structured program for both mental and physical pain. His website is <a href="http://www.backincontrol.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.backincontrol.com</a>.</p><p></p><h2>CEU Information: </h2><blockquote></blockquote><h3>Board Certified Patient Advocates (BCPA): </h3><p></p><p><strong>This session is available for BCPA CEs (1 CE). </strong>Your purchase includes access to the event recording that originally took place on October 17, 2019. It also includes materials related to the presentation (slides, Q&amp;A, etc.). </p><p>In order to receive your BCPA 1.0 CE credit as per PACB requirements,  you must complete a post-assessment. Instructions for how to access the recording and assessment will be provided via email after completing registration.
