Painted Space/Architectural Space: A Conversation with Anne Sherwood Pundyk and Architect, Andrew BermanAnne is joined by architect, Andrew Berman, in a conversation comparing their respective processes for creating meaning through the vehicle of crafted space. As a painter, Anne uses color, form, and texture to bring light into her paintings on stitched, cropped, and sewn unstretched canvas. Andrew designs unique spaces and structures which resolve purpose, place, and materials. His projects come alive in the light and gain character over time through use and weathering. Anne created the work in the exhibition in her Mattituck studio which Andrew designed.This Gallery Talk is immediately followed by a live gallery performance by Moka Pot Duo!Doors open at 12:30PM11 West Gallery [11 W. Main St., Riverhead]Space is limited. Please reserve ahead.About Anne – An artist and writer, Anne Sherwood Pundyk brings together the traditions of abstract art, textiles and storytelling. Activated by color, her unstretched paintings are constructed from stained, cropped and sewn sections of drop cloth canvas. Elements of her studio work link directly to her photographs, artist’s books, writing and performance pieces. Based in New York, Pundyk has engaged in her art making, exhibiting and art writing over the last 35 years. She relocated her studio to the North Fork ten years ago. Curator Helen A. Harrison observed, “…[Pundyk’s] work suggests that understanding requires another interpretive tool, or perhaps a personal surrender to a deeper, less accessible, level of cognition.” The move has been the catalyst for a fundamental re-centering of her art around adapting everyday forms with an eye toward questioning convention. <a href="http://annesherwoodpundyk.com" title="http://annesherwoodpundyk.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">annesherwoodpundyk.com</a> @anne.sherwood.pundykAndrew Berman ArchitectsAndrew Berman Architect is a New York City-based practice focused on the realization of situated and finely executed buildings and public spaces. Since 1995 the practice has worked on a wide range of project types and scales for diverse clients; public, institutional, and private. Each commission is approached on its own unique terms through an intensive engagement with user and site, drawing on the practice’s broad range of experience in design and construction. Andrew Berman and a team of architects work collaboratively from conceptual design through construction to ensure that ideas and intentions are materially realized. The work of the studio is intended to be inextricably of its place; an expression of our clients, their cultures, and specific needs.The studio has received numerous awards, including fifteen AIA Design Awards, two Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards, an AIA/ALA National Library Building Award, and an invitation from the Vatican to design a chapel for the 2018 Venice Biennale. Their institutional and cultural clients include New York Public Library, Princeton Public Library, Skokie Public Library, MoMA PS1, SculptureCenter, University at Buffalo School of Architecture, and Lyman Allyn Art Museum.Andrew Berman BioSince founding Andrew Berman Architect in 1995, Andrew has led his award-winning practice through successful completion of a varied body of work. Andrew’s experience ranges from cultural and performing arts projects to public commissions to finely wrought private residences. Andrew collaborates closely with clients and the architects in his office on all aspects of the firm’s work. Andrew has developed an approach in which research, design, and construction operate together in a continuous feedback loop. All facets of the practice are seen as a source for the making of an architecture that is precisely attuned to both its site and its diverse users.Andrew Berman received a Bachelor of Arts from Yale College and a Master of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture in 1988 where he was awarded the Takenaka Komuten Traveling Fellowship in Osaka, Japan.
