Exploring Mental Illness &amp; Stigma
January 29th, 2020 6:30pm-9:00pm  
 
Join us on January 29th, 2020 at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre for an event of exploration into mental illness,stigma and the families it affects. We will hear from four distinguished guest speakers and light refreshments will be provided. Included in your registration fee are two books written by two of our guest speakers, valued at over $50.00! 
All proceeds from this event will go toward the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre &amp; Salus Ottawa.

Sharon Johnston

Mrs. Johnston has been a tireless, outspoken champion and advocate of mental health awareness and issues for many years. She has added her voice to reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness and has had the opportunity to visit many organizations with innovative mental health practices, programs, services and research projects across Canada.
 Sharon began her working career in Kingston, Ontario, as a psychiatric occupational therapist with young adults at Kingston General Hospital, and then as a therapist at Beechgrove, a treatment centre for young children with learning and behavioural problems. When the Johnston family moved to Toronto, she worked at the Crippled Children’s Centre in Occupational Therapy. In 1966, Mrs. Johnston completed her studies in physical and occupational therapy at the University of Toronto. Later, she completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Science at McGill University, and obtained her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science at McGill University. In June 2016, Mrs. Johnston was appointed Honorary Captain (Navy) for Military Personnel Command of the Canadian Armed Forces. She recently published her first novel Matrons and Madams.
 
 
 Susan Doherty
Author of The Ghost Garden

Susan Doherty is author of the award winning The Ghost Garden, a book about an Ottawa woman's long struggle with schizophrenia comes to the stage with a strong message so supportive and linked to the Bell Let’s Talk goal. See the person, not the illness! 
Educated at Concordia University and Ryerson, Susan Doherty has worked at Maclean's Magazine, the International Herald Tribune and ran her own advertising production company for 20 years.  After 28 long years in Toronto she returned to Montreal and wrote her debut novel, A Secret Music, published in 2015. Research for her novel led her to the Douglas Hospital, and ten extraordinary years as a volunteer with people suffering from extreme psychosis. The Ghost Garden is the culmination of her work in the excavation of mental illness. Susan's affiliations include: the YMCA, the Douglas Institute, the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Quebec Writers Federation and Nazareth House, a shelter for the homeless and addicted.
 
 Dr. Nicola Wright, Ph.D, C. Psych

Dr Nicola Wright has been a registered Clinical Psychologist for over 25 years. She has worked as a Psychologist with The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, Canada since 1999 where she has provided individual and group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis (CBTP) for the past 21 years. Nicola is also employed as an Adjunct Faculty member with the Beck Institute of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT).  Nicola was Chief of Psychology at The Royal Ottawa and Director of Training for the Royal Ottawa’s Clinical Psychology Pre-doctoral Residency Program. Given her passion for psychology, education and training, Nicola served as President of the Canadian Council of Professional Psychology Programs and on the Accreditation Panel of the Canadian Psychological Association. Nicola is a Clinical Professor with the School of Psychology, University of Ottawa. She is the lead author of a book for clinicians on CBTP (Treating Psychosis by Wright, Turkington, Kelly, Davies, Jacobs &amp; Hopton, 2014) as well as numerous chapters and articles. Nicola has been the principle investigator on three randomized controlled studies on CBT for Psychosis and Voices. Nicola conducts consultation, supervision and professional training for the Beck Institute of CBT and presents training workshops on CBT for Psychosis internationally. She believes passionately in advocacy and an empowering evidence-based recovery-oriented approach to working with those who experience psychosis.

<DIV STYLE="font-family: verdana,sans-serif;">Author of Jason: 1 | Stigma: 0 Mental health advocate, stigma fighter, professional speaker and founder of StigmaZero, Jason is also the instructor of the Create Your StigmaZero Workplace online training program. As someone who has experienced both a major physical illness (heart defect leading to open heart surgery in 1988) and a major mental illness (bipolar disorder leading to hospitalization in 2005), Jason shares his personal experiences with impactful storytelling techniques. </DIV>

<DIV STYLE="font-family: verdana,sans-serif;">These moving stories can be found as part of StigmaZero's online programs, through his inspirational keynotes, and in his book Jason: 1 | Stigma: 0 – My Battle with Mental Illness at Home and in the Workplace. Jason aims to make this difficult topic accessible and consumable, so he blends his stories with rigorous research in order to mobilize knowledge and perspective. His goal is for everyone to understand this important topic so they are empowered to make a real change and ultimately join in the effort to realize his vision for a future without stigma. </DIV>

There is parking on site. The venue is right on Carling Avenue and the bus stops out front.
