It really is something.” – Leah Kardos, Wire Magazine Electrifying, enigmatic, trailblazing and utterly singular – the world lost one of its most fascinating frontmen on February 9th – the great Damo Suzuki. As the voice of legendary krautrock pioneers Can for four of their most revered albums (Soundtracks, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days), Suzuki redefined the parameters of what a lead singer could be. A teenage Japanese expat turned European vagabond, it was a chance encounter while delivering a shrieking, street busking performance in Munich that led Can’s bassist Holger Czukay and drummer Jaki Liebezeit to invite Damo to join their newly singer-less band, without rehearsal, for a four-night, sold out residency at a nearby club…kicking off that very night. Suzuki took the stage and improvised over the band’s flowing, metronomic grooves and the rest is history. On the mic, his voice undulated from hypnotic hush to shattering scream, delivering cryptic poetry while often shifting from English one moment to Japanese the next and then to a wholly invented language. A striking figure with long, black, shaggy hair, he captivated on stage, shimmying shirtless and barefoot. Unlike most singers of the day, he made no effort to disguise his accent – the effect of which only draws listeners closer and commands their attention. Later in his career, he would form Damo Suzuki’s Network, embarking on what he called “The Never-Ending Tour”, traveling around the world to more than 40 countries to jam with musicians he’d never played with before, whom he called “sound carriers” and with whom, without rehearsal, he would engage in live “instant composing.” On April 13th, The Philosophical Research Society will proudly pay tribute to Suzuki with the LA premiere of Michelle Heighway's ENERGY: A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT DAMO SUZUKI and PRS CAN MIX, our original visual mixtape of enthralling, vintage clips of Damo and Can in performance at the height of their powers. ABOUT ENERGY: A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT DAMO SUZUKI:An existential journey through the power of healing with the enigmatic Damo Suzuki, former lead singer of krautrock legends CAN. Critically acclaimed director Michelle Heighway has been working with the mercurial Japanese-born musician since 2014, culminating in the fascinating insights of ENERGY. The film follows Suzuki over five years of his life in Germany and the UK as he confronts cancer and attempts to continue a never-ending global tour. The film’s production was made possible by the incredible support it received from two crowdfunding campaigns and now finally makes its LA premiere at PRS! PARKINGParking is available in both front lot (entry from Los Feliz Blvd. when heading east) and back lot (entry from first alley way, off Griffith Park Blvd. from intersection with Los Feliz Blvd.), as well as ample street parking on Griffith Park Blvd.
