Rising healthcare prices pose a high financial burden on businesses and their employees. There’s also a new bevy of lawsuits establishing fiduciary risks for employers that offer health insurance benefits, which has employers turning to reference-based pricing (RBP) as a solution to reduce costs and ensure they are meeting their fiduciary duty. Reference-based pricing leverages a transparent, fair payment methodology – often a multiple of Medicare’s price or a price based on the provider’s cost structure – to eliminate the opaque game of network discounts and generate savings of up to 30%. RBP is gaining traction in Maine and across the country, however this solution requires commitment and engagement from HR and finance teams. Companies succeed with RBP when their TPA works well with RBP; the RBP partner provides support to effectively communicate how the health plan works for employees; and employers are educated on how to overcome potential disruption.
