StorySlam Oakland

The Sound Room is aptly named. The focus is on the sound or the music. Unlike clubs where the performance may be peripheral to the experience, at the Sound Room the performance is the experience.  We are an all-ages listening room. We exist to present great music and promote jazz as an art form.The Sound Room is the home of Bay Area Jazz & Arts, a  501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on promoting the Arts.

StorySlam Oakland is Oakland's longest-running true storytelling show, where people tell short and true stories from their lives. Or just listen and laugh. The theme changes every month. You can tell any story about yourself that touches on the theme in some way. This month the theme is: Do What You're ToldCome hear stories about people following instructions...or not. Some people are precise, some are rebellious, some are slackers or just confused. When did you disobey? When did you do -- or not do -- what you'd been told, and what were the consequences? We want to hear those stories. Special guest co-host: Gina Gold.Gina Gold boldly pokes fun at her own idiosyncrasies as a Jewish, African-American, Bay Area native who is really from Queens, NY. After telling her story, "Hands Up" on the radio show Snap Judgment, Gina started her own comedy storytelling series called TMI Storytelling ("Too Much Information") -- here in Oakland. In fact, her show used to take place right on Broadway not far from The Sound Room, but that was before the pandemic. Gina has toured the country as a cast member of the hit show, "You're Funny But You Don't Look Jewish." More recently, she has branched out from performing to coaching public speaking and transformation. HOW THE SHOW WORKS:Anybody can put their name in the hat for a chance to tell their true, personal story on the theme.Storytellers will be mostly picked at random from the names in the hat. We may have one or two special picked guests. We usually have time for 8 to 10 open-mic storytellers. We also present one or two Featured Storytellers from our wonderful storytelling community. These are people who have won awards at various shows, or just are known to us for their great storytelling style and charisma. The Featured Storytellers tell true, personal stories, but a little longer than the open-mic'ers.There is excellent food and drink available from the Sound Room cafe.The venue is wheelchair accessible. There will be one intermission. StorySlam Oakland rules for storytelling:Put your name in the hat for a chance to tellStories must be about YOUStories must be TRUELength should be about 5 to 6 minutes, but no longerStories must be told aloud, not read and NO notes! Tell it just like you're telling friends around a dinner table.No pressure! Just have fun. There is no voting and no judging.
