Family Class: Baking and Ancient Writing

Families will make and taste cuneiform-inspired cookies and learn more about how writing was invented.

What do ancient writing techniques, early literacy and cookies have in common? Learn how to create your own cuneiform cookies, inspired by Philadelphia’s own collections of ancient clay tablets used to write and record information. Participants will make and taste the cookies and learn more about how writing was invented. There will also be an opportunity to make your own seal similar to those found in archaeological digs; seals will be available to take home and use with additional baking recipes in your own home kitchen. This program is open to children ages 7 to 12 and their caregivers. SNAP eligible participants are provided with a free ticket, with advance communication. She combines her training in classical French cooking and baking techniques with a background in Anthropology and Education to develop and implement community-inspired cooking classes. Yaroub Al-Obaidi: Born in Iraq, Yaroub has lived in Philadelphia since June 2016. Building on his experiences as a designer, researcher, author, lecturer and community organizer, he began working at the Penn Museum in order to use history and archaeology to shed light on our past.
