2020 Town of Brookline MLK Day Celebration

Our MissionEach year MLK Day provides an opportunity for Brookline residents to remember a hero martyred in the effort to achieve equality in America. Despite his sacrifice and that of many others who participated in the Civil Rights Movement, and, despite the progress made in the nearly 50 years since his death, full equality has not been achieved.Brookline’s MLK Day is an expression of the Town’s commitment to racial equality. During the year, the Committee will sponsor and plan events that bring us together to celebrate our diversity, to learn from one another, to better understand how racial inequality divides us, and, most importantly, how we may work together to achieve the goal of equality.

<H2>Please join together for Brookline's celebration of the life and values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 3 pm Monday, January 20, 2020, at the Coolidge Corner Theatre.</H2>
"Roxbury to Brookline: One Family's Experience" 
This year's program will feature Keynote Speaker, Ruth Ellen Fitch.   
The program includes poetry, music and the inspirational words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Also featuring: poet/performer Regie Gibson, the Brookline High School Testostatones, the Brookline High School Glee Club, and Brookline Poet Laureate Zvi A. Sesling. 
<H2>This event is free but to guarantee a seat you must reserve a ticket beforehand.</H2>
Reserved tickets are available on EventBrite until Friday, January 17th.
In addition to reserved tickets some more have set aside for those unaware of, or unable to, access this online ticketing procedure. Remaining seats will be filled on a first come basis at the Coolidge Corner Theatre just before showtime. 
PLEASE NOTE: Seating is limited, so come early. Doors will open at 2:30 pm.  
Sign language interpretation will be provided.  Other reasonable accomodations are avaialble upon request - please contact Caitlin Starr at cstarr@brooklinema.gov or at 617-730-2345.  
The Coolidge Corner Theater is accessible to persons with disabilities.
 
<H2>On MLK Day, participate in one of our Brookline Day of Service Projects:</H2>
MORE THAN WORDS BOOKSTORE AND CAFE, book, CD, DVD, and video game drive.
More Than Words is a non-profit that has served at-risk youth in the greater Boston area since 2004.  With locations in South Boston and Waltham, they provide in-store job training in a challenging but supportive environment to young people who are out of school, homeless, in the foster care system, or in the criminal justice system.
We will be accepting books in good condition, both paperback and hardbound, CDs, DVDs, and video games in good condition, suitable for resale. If you are interested in volunteering at the collection, need packing boxes, require assistance or have general questions about the drive, please contact Chobee Hoy at chobee.hoy@compass.com or at 617-513-6073.

Inspo: Expo Presents Welcome Blanket "Knit In"
The Town of Brookline's MLK Celebration Committee invites you to come learn how to knit, crochet, or quilt a Welcome Blanket (www.welcomeblanket.org)
Your blankets will be displayed in March as part of HIAS's National Refugee Shabbat and then gifted to local resettlement agencies to our newest neighbors.  All crafting abilities and all ages welcome to this free event!
Located at Kehillath Israel, 384 Harvard Street from 1PM to 3PM.

<H2>MLK Day FAQs  </H2>
Do I have to bring my ticket to the event?
Yes (however, if you forget to bring it don't worry, we will have a list of preregistered attendees at the door). After you register on this site you will receive a confirmation email that will allow you to print a paper ticket or download it to your smartphone.
Is this event suitable for children?
All ages are welcome although the program content is geared towards adults. 
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Parking is availble but limited in the Coolidge Corner area. Since MLK Day is a holiday, parking at meters is free. However, using public transporation is encouraged. The Coolidge Corner Theatre is one block north of the Coolidge Corner T-Stop on the Green Line (C). The #66 Bus stops on Harvard Street near the theater.
The Knit In and the book drive are both a short walk from the theater.

Sorry, but the tickets available to pre-reserve have been taken.
Some additional tickets, however, have set aside for distribution on the day of the event for those unaware of, or unable to, access this online ticketing procedure. And, since this is a free event, there will also be a number of no-shows. 
Doors will open at 2:30 for those with reserved tickets. At 2:50 we will fill remaining seats to those people next in line. If you come to the theater it is possible you’ll be able to get a seat.
If not, the complete presentation will be available for viewing on the Brookline Interactive Group's (BIG) YouTube channel a few days after the event.
