For the Latino community, mental health can be a difficult topic since it can be perceived as taboo. Many experiences can lead to or exacerbate mental health conditions including immigration, trauma, assimilation into a different culture, marginalization and generational conflicts. In addition to the language barrier, the Latino community can face obstacles to accessing needed services, leading some to suffer in silence instead of receiving proper treatment. What should we know about mental health in the Latino community? What resources are available? How can Latinos receive services earlier in order to reduce long-term suffering? How can the social taboos around mental health conditions be dismantled?
