About this event

  • 3 hours

SVBC will teach you all the basics of fixing your bike so it is safe to ride! This hands-on, in-person, skill-building workshop empowers you to repair and maintain your own bike. The 2.5 hour class is open to ages 14 and up. You are encouraged to bring your own bike to learn and work on!

Air - how to fix a flat, how to find out how much air to put in your tires, and taking wheels on and off.

Brakes - diagnose what adjustments your brakes need and learn to make the adjustments.

Chain/Cassette - learn to make the adjustments to help your chain move smoothly and quietly across the cassette and chainrings.

A dditional issues/topics may be covered as time allows.

Please bring no more than one bike per class participant. It is ok if you do not bring a bike but best if you can bring your own bike to work on. Please also bring a rag or two if you can.

What past attendees have said about the class:

"Loved being able to practice tube patching. Loved that you had so many staff who were knowledgeable." - Melissa P.
"I felt more capable of fixing my bike which made me want to bicycle more!" - Frankie E.

"Made me more aware of how wear-and-tear affects the mechanics of my bike, and how often I should be prioritizing basic maintenance - also led me to purchase a few new tools to keep my ride in good shape" - Lauren B.

"I liked becoming more comfortable with repairing my bicycle." - Isabel E.

While we hope you'll ride your bike, motor vehicle parking is available in the parking lot behind SVBC's world headquarters at 155 S 11th St, San José, CA 95112 (take the first driveway on your left after San Antonio as you ride/drive north on 11th St, park behind the building to the right of the driveway).

Bicycle instruction and parking is in our outside fenced courtyard behind our building (if it is not raining) and inside our building if it is raining. Whether you drive, bike, or walk, please enter through our back gate behind our building.

This class is provided to the public for free with funding from 2016 Measure B courtesy of VTA . While free to participants, it costs about $150/person signed up to conduct this course so if you signup make sure you show up -- otherwise this taxpayer money is wasted and cannot be recovered.

Everyone who attends gets a patch kit and a set of tire levers!
