Massachusetts Civic Learning Week 2024

Civic Learning Week 2024 seeks to highlight the importance of civic education in sustaining and strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States. The theme this year is “2024 and Beyond: Civic Learning as a Unifying Force.”

This session will spotlight the experiences of districts that have used DESE Civics Teaching and Learning Grant funding to strengthen civics education for their students. Participants will hear from them about how they worked creatively to assess their districts' needs and develop their approach, built investment from other educators and community members, and maximized the impact of the funds they received. Panelists will be available at the end of the session to consult with participants who are applying for <a href="https://www.doe.mass.edu/grants/2025/0589/" title="https://www.doe.mass.edu/grants/2025/0589/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">this year's Civics Teaching and Learning Grant</a> (due April 1)—feel free to come with your ideas or in-progress proposals! This session is hosted by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Our panelists will be:<ul><li>Meg DeLong, K-12 Social Studies Coordinator, Haverhill Public Schools</li><li>Laura Hubert, Library Media Specialist &amp; Elementary HSS Lead, Chelsea Public Schools</li><li>Greg Porter, Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator (K-8), Brookline Public Schools</li><li>Kristen Tabacco, Assistant Director of Curriculum for History PreK-12, Lynn Public Schools</li></ul>We will also be joined by representatives from a variety of organizations who have partnered with districts in grant-funded activities such as iCivics, Generation Citizen, and the Democratic Knowledge Project.
