2024 Global Media Festival

The Global Media Festival is the Georgia Tech School of Modern Languages’ annual film and discussion series focusing on sustainability across languages and cultures. The 2024 festival explores themes around a variety of UN sustainable development goals.

Alice Júnior, a carefree, spoiled, trans YouTuber, has everything she could ask for. But when her father announces their move from the vibrant Brazilian city of Recife to a conservative small town where she must attend a traditional catholic school, the rebellious Alice prepares herself for small-minded prudery. Alice Júnior celebrates rethinking outdated perspectives of gender, sexuality, and differences as a whole.

Diana Moro, film producer, oversaw the development of Alice, Junior, from inception through distribution. With a degree in Film Production from the New York Film Academy, Diana has worked at CNT TV in the state of Paraná, Brazil, and served as the local producer for Steven Spielberg's documentary series Survivors of Shoah. Moro’s production company Moro Films produced genre features such as Nervo Craniano Zero, Lament and The Battle of Shangri-la, and serves as the international sales agent of the critically acclaimed Alice, Junior. Recently Moro has produced One Happy Family by Brazilian director José Eduardo Belmonte and worked on a crime series for HBO.The Global Media Festival will also feature a discussion panel with the following speakers: Dr. Daren Fowler, lecturer in the School of Film, Media, &amp; Theatre at Georgia State University, researches the material and lived practices of queer and trans people, as well as how activists, artists, and organizers build community and survival. Their work has appeared in The Routledge Companion to Media and Risk; in In Media Res; and in liquid blackness, for which they served as managing editor from 2015-2020.Dr. Tanju Ozdemir, Turkish filmmaker and Assistant Professor at Emory University, writes-directs narrative films on the complexity of immigration, identity, and memory. Dr. Ozdemir's cinematic works, which have selected for a variety of prominent national and global festivals, include his latest short, "Woodpecker," about a Kurdish, gay, graduate student from Turkey who seeks asylum while familiarizing himself with the Turkish-Kurdish diasporas in the US.Toni Bryce, trans actress and activist, is known for her roles in P-Valley (STARZ), She Hulk: Attorney at Law (Disney+), and The Chi (Showtime).Ava Davis, a stage and film performer, aka the "Duchess of Grant Park," is a Sundance Fellow (2021, Trans Possibilities Intensive) who lives in Atlanta. She has appeared in movies including Give Me An A, Could This Have Been An Email, and The Duchess of Grant Park, recently signing a deal for the last to stream on Atlanta's PBS affiliate WABE after it screened in festivals such as Out On Film, TRANSlations, the Atlanta Underground Film Festival, and the Atlanta Women's Comedy Festival. Davis also has performed on stage in New York and Atlanta and worked with Seattle's TRANSlation Film Festival and the Seattle Queer Film Festival, hosting their virtual tea time program which included interviews with Lily Wachowski, Sam Berliner, and Ser Anzoategui and serving on juries for the Atlanta LGBTQ festival Out On Film and Tampa's LGBTQ Film Festival. Davis is now producing and securing finances for her first feature, The Waltz, about a young, single, trans woman who teams up with a reluctant dance partner to pursue her dream of learning the waltz, only for the two to slowly fall for each other while fighting insecurities and social pressure.
