Ways to Leverage Skills Towards a Career in Science Management

The Gulf Coast Consortia (GCC) brings great minds together for the greater good—pushing the limits of what’s possible in the biosciences through collaboration with the greater scientific community.The organization is a collaboration of basic and translational scientists, researchers, clinicians and students in the quantitative biomedical sciences who help advance the region’s scientific progress through participation in joint training and research programs, utilization of shared equipment and core facilities, and the exchange of scientific knowledge.For more than a decade, the GCC has earned an unprecedented legacy for overcoming barriers between departments and institutions, increasing cooperation and collaborations, and training young scientists for future careers in the biomedical sciences.The organization’s programs and core facilities are supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT),  John S. Dunn Foundation, and its member institutions.

"Ways to Leverage Skills Towards a Career in Science Management"

Catherine L. Higgins, Ph.D.
Director of Scientific Program Management at Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C)
Dr. Higgins will talk about how to build upon and strengthen skills learned in the lab for roles in managing science projects and programs in a variety of settings. 
Dr. Higgins spearheads administration and organization of SU2C's rapidly growing scientific portfolio. Previously, she was Director of the Human Research Protection Program at Texas A&M University. Within 3 years, she transformed the program to AAHRPP accreditation and decreased average IRB approval times from over 60 days to around 15 days. She was also Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management of the School of Public Health, Texas A&M Health Science Center, teaching courses in foundations of clinical translational research and clinical research methods and design. Formerly, Dr. Higgins was Program Director for the Gulf Coast Consortia which is involved in multi-institutional, interdisciplinary research development in Houston's Texas Medical Center. Her postdoctoral research was in biochemistry of human atherosclerosis at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her Ph.D. in chemistry specializing in protein folding and biophysical chemistry at Tulane University. Her research has been featured on the covers of journals, such as The FEBS Journal and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. Overall, Dr. Higgins has 20 years’ experience in the research enterprise, ranging from basic sciences and clinical and translational research to research development and compliance, and is interested in fostering innovative scientific research for integration into the community and for benefit to humankind.
