TheHenry Miller Memorial Libraryis a public beneﬁt, non-proﬁt 501 (c) 3 organization championing the literary, artistic and cultural contributions of the late writer, artist, and Big Sur resident Henry Miller. The Library tries to do as little as possible since we are in Big Sur a place very well suited for doing nothing. It turns out to be difficult however because Henry Miller is egging us on to promote the things he believes make life worth living like good conversation, freedom of thought, good food, sex and art in all its forms; old, new, weird and varied! Saturday February 24, 3 - 5 PMA towering figure in the literary and cultural landscape of Big Sur, Jaime was a writer and a neighbor of Henry Miller on Partington Ridge. About Gui Mayo (picture above), author of "The Old Coyote."Gui grew up in Big Sur, "off the grid"—isolated in a wildly dysfunctional family with a brilliant but extremely eccentric (and hard-drinking) father. All through her life she had complex and conflicted feeligs toward her father, so much so that in her later years she dropped the DeAngulo name altogether and adopted the last name of Jaime's mother , Mayo, and became Gui Mayo.In 1995, Gui published The Old Coyote of Big Sur, her biography of Jaime deAngulo. Jaime in Taos, published by City Lights in 1985, was her earlier book. &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; Andrew Schelling’s biography of Jaime deAngulo―'cattle puncher, medical doctor, bohemian, buckeroo,' among other things―presents a fascinating, full-bodied portrait of a man and an era, as well as delving deep into California’s Native history. De Angulo’s isn't a household name, but in Schelling's work the man called by Ezra Pound the 'American Ovid' comes blazing to life in all his singular brilliance." ―Stephen Sparks, Literary Hub Jaime de Angulo's linguistic and ethnographic work, his writings, as well as the legends that cloak the Old Coyote himself, reflect the particulars of the Pacific Coast. In each retelling, through each storyteller, stories are continually revivified, and that is precisely what Andrew Schelling has done in Tracks Along the Left Coast, weaving together the story of de Angulo's life with the story of the land and the people, languages, and cultures with whom it is so closely tied.

A review of Tracks Along The Left Coast:The chief challenge in elaborating the bios of biography is taking account of the many human and nonhuman networks, temporal overlaps and discrepancies, social accidents and miscommunications, and interpersonal fantasies that make up a person’s life. This challenge is amplified when dealing with a metamorphic figure like Jaime deAngulo: a Spanish émigré to the US, then rodeo cowboy in the Midwest, then a prison guard in British Honduras, then firefighter in San Francisco, then medical doctor and psychologist for the US Army, then fruit fly researcher at Stanford University, and then a rancher in the Big Sur mountain range and, later, transvestite bohemian in the Bay Area—all while becoming a specialist in over a dozen native Californian languages, producing important works of ethnography and ethnomusicology, composing some of the finest poetry of the twentieth-century (“the American Ovid,” Ezra Pound called him), and preparing his lifework of ethnography, storytelling, and myth, Indian Tales. As if that weren’t a heady enough challenge, imagine having to take account, as well, of the thresholds in which deAngulo lived—between indigenous and non-indigenous worlds, between academia and the open road of a visionary poet and linguist, between sexes, and even across the line that divides us from our other-than-human kin. Andrew Schelling has done a truly magisterial job of meeting such a challenge. This biography tells the story of deAngulo’s life with the visionary expansiveness that only a poet like Schelling could have mustered. In so doing, Schelling gives us an intimate view of a world too often overlooked in literary studies: the distinct, because profoundly intercultural, world of Pacific coast literary modernism. This book would be highly appealing to poets and scholars of poetry, as well as to anyone who wants to know something about the mythic lives that make the atmosphere of poets and artists hailing from “the left coast” of the American landmass. Giving readers something like a grammar of the air there, Schelling’s biography of de Angulo helps us to read the breath and measure of the Pacific coast.
