Highwire Improv's mission is to build and foster a community that brings all of Baltimore to the world through improvisational theater, and an organization that brings the best of the world to Baltimore. We envision a world where everyone feels included, heard, and represented without regard to race, gender, or orientation.What sort of events do we host?  Amazing live improv theater shows (comedic and dramatic) and classes and workshops that teach you the joy, craft, and magic of improv!All classes and workshops are for participants  ages 18 and older unless otherwise specified.

Ready to  dive in to learning improv? Our multi-week classes are the place for you!  With foundations classes for beginners and a wide range of skill modules for advanced improvisers, there's always something to learn from Highwire's awesome teachers!

Fundamentals of Improv Classes

Start learning improv with Highwire Improv!  Our education program begins with two six-week fundamentals of improv classes.  By the end of this training, you'll be ready to take control of your improv education with shows, workshops, and more!

Do you love to sing? Do you love to make up stories? Do you love to joke around with some friends? Take any or all of those budding interests to the next level with this musical improv class!Embark on a captivating journey as you learn to create improvised songs and musicals in the style of a Broadway show!By the end of the class, you'll understand using song structures collaboratively as a tool to craft instant lyrics and melodies with your teammates.Picture yourself collaborating with fellow participants to bring to life a vibrant musical world filled with catchy tunes, compelling scenes, whimsical characters, and plots that take unexpected and delightful turns.This class promises a joyful exploration of creativity, offering a unique opportunity to express yourself through the magic of spontaneous musical tales in the grand tradition of musicals. With the support of two great facilitators and a team of fellow perfomers, you will learn how to put on an entirely improvised musical comedy show in just four week!Week 1 (Wed. 3/6): Song StructureWeek 2 (Wed. 3/13): Improv and ContentWeek 3 (Wed. 3/20): Narrative FormatWeek 4 (Wed. 3/27): MusicalityOptional showcase on Thursday 4/11 for your friends, family, and invited guests!No prior experience required!About your instructors:Brian Young (he/him) and Casey Watts (he/him) have been teaching musical improv together for many years with the nonprofit Baltimore Musical Improv Meetup. They make improvised musicals together in the Baltimore-based musical improv group Bad Karaoke Experience (BKE). In a given show, you’ll see them both alternating between singing on stage and doing back-line instrumental accompaniment (Brian on piano, Casey on accordion). BKE has played in DC's Improvapolooza, the New York City Musical Improv Festival, and the Baltimore Improv Festival (BIG).Brian is also a member of other Baltimore improv teams, including A++ (an all-Asian-American comedy group), and Ready Set No (a D.A.R.E.-style school assembly satire duo). Brian and the cast of Belle! An Improvised Tennessee Williams Play created a series of unique one-act shows at the 2019 Charm City Fringe Festival with encores at BIG in early 2020. Brian holds a BA in Piano Performance from Bowie State University.Casey (he/him) is a long-time teacher, including: musical improv, dancing, web development, and technical skills. Casey can play Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance on at least 15 instruments — and he owns an instrument in every color of the rainbow. Imagine someone walking down the street singing, dancing, and blowing bubbles - that’s Casey!About Highwire Improv:Highwire Improv is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization based in Baltimore, Maryland.
