We will be developing monoprints of hot houses we have been living in to be printed into individual artist books for each participant.

On 19 September 2023, the Bureau of Meterology formally announced an El Niño event for Australia during our 2023/24 summer. El Niño events ‘involve the release of a large amount of heat from the ocean’s surface to the atmosphere’, meaning this summer, parts of the country will experience warmer and drier conditions, increasing the risks of fire danger and heatwaves.Though Australian tenancy laws outline a ‘fixed working heater in the main living area’ as a minimum requirement for rental properties, though cooling has yet to be mandated. In increased economic and climate precarity, many renters are left baking in their apartments and sharehouses every summer.In this workshop, we will be developing monoprints of the hot houses we have been living in as we talk through the summer/rental experiences together and arm ourselves with tools to survive the upcoming heat.Individual monoprints will be printed into artist books for participants to take home after the workshop. - Bea Rubio-Gabriel is a writer, performance artist, and curator born in the Philippines now living and working in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. Approaching writing as artform and ephemera, they use ergodic texts and homemade books to create new modes of access and dismantle dominant knowledge and power structures. Currently interrogating systems of care and Resistance Aesthetics, they challenge current curatorial and euro-centric modes of exhibiting by approaching the curatorial as its own artistic medium; grounded in rhizomatic ways of care and collectivisation. Their research currently focuses on the moral economy of labour, care critique, and the politics of translation. Image: hot house (Empire Street), 2023.
