The Center for Children and Youth—Child Training Institute (CTI) provides in-depth training to social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals who seek knowledge in the latest treatments and techniques to help their young patients.CTI hosts events virtually and at our San Francisco location. Trainings are open to the public and include continuing education credits for qualified participants. Help families develop a more compassionate approach to behavioral and emotional issues in children.

Overview:In this workshop you will learn the foundations for understanding the Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model as developed by Richard Schwartz. IFS combines aspects of systems thinking with a focus on individual psychology, aiming to help individuals understand and integrate the various parts of their inner selves. In this training, we will cover the basic tenets of the model as well as the protocol for working with children and families. The use of the IFS philosophy and way of understanding children’s presenting symptoms will be highlighted to help families develop a more compassionate approach to behavioral and emotional issues in children.Materials for the best use of the model as well as ways to introduce this modality will be covered. Photos and videos will be presented to help clinicians see IFS in action. We will also discuss how to use the model in a variety of settings, such as one on one therapy, in groups, in schools and agencies.Experiential exercises will also help participants try out using the model to help clinicians embody the practice.Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:<ul><li>Identify what are parts of Self.</li><li>Define Managers, Firefighters and Exiles and their roles in the inner system.</li><li>Explain the IFS way of looking at symptomatology.</li><li>Demonstrate ways to locate and dialogue with a part of themselves.</li></ul>

About the Trainers:Lisa Spiegel, MA, LMHC received her BA from Vassar College, and has a Master's degree in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University. From her four decades of working with adults and children she has developed an approach that draws from an eclectic array of disciplines - talk therapy, trauma work, yoga, mindfulness, and parent coaching. Her post-graduate education includes certification in Internal Family Systems Therapy, LifeForce Yoga®, and couples counseling from the Relational Life Institute. Lisa is a Level III trained EMDR practitioner and has used this modality since 2000. She is also a certified Safe and Sound Protocol practitioner. She is the author of Internal Family Systems Therapy with Children, published in 2017, and is the co-author with Jean Kunhardt and Sandra K. Basile of A Mother’s Circle. Lisa is the Board President of Healing Justice, an organization dedicated to restorative justice for wrongly convicted individuals and the initial victims of the crime. In her free time, Lisa is active in political causes and enjoys yoga, needlework, being in nature, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.Please Note:CTI knowingly acknowledges that the information presented in the program by Lisa Spiegel may reference material widely written about by this author but is not intended to promote the sale of her books. Child Training Institute (CTI) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CTI maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The CA BBS recognizes the APA as an approval agency to meet their CE requirements. Disciplines such as social workers and counselors outside of California should check with their respective state board to assure acceptance of APA approved sponsors for CE credits.In order to receive CE credits, participants must purchase a Registration Including CE Credit ticket. Full attendance is required in order to receive CE credits and no partial credit will be offered. Failure to meet this requirement will prohibit the Child Training Institute from issuing a CE certificate and no refund will be provided.Registration and Cancellation:Pre-registration is required. Cancellation requests emailed to the event manager prior to 11:59 pm on Wednesday, 5/15/24, will receive a full refund. No refunds for cancellation requests received on or after 5/16/24 regardless of the cause for cancellation including failure to join the meeting on the day of the training. If the training cannot be held due to circumstances beyond the hosts’ control (natural disaster, strike, fire, severe weather, illness of speaker, speaker cancellation, etc.) the event will be rescheduled, if possible, and the registration fee applied to that date.
