Beth Macy, author of Dopesick and Raising Lazarus, examines the devastating opioid crisis in America.

Journalist Beth Macy unveils the raw, human side of the opioid crisis - from its beginnings in small-town Virginia and its stratospheric rise, to the everyday heroes fighting to save lives ten years on. In Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America, Macy weaves a complex tale of public health, company avarice, shadowy finances, political intrigue, racial dynamics, and class struggles. Her followup, Raising Lazarus: Hope, Justice, and the Future of America’s Overdose Crisis, profiles “treatment innovators” working to help those suffering. The Washington Post says Macy is “back with a portrait of the compassionate and practical people who have stepped in to help stem the tens of thousands of drug deaths that still destroy families every year.” Macy’s books are must-reads for every American eager to comprehend the multifaceted dimensions of a crisis that touches us all.
