<h3>ARTIST STATEMENT "You Can’t Unring the Bell is about spiritual beings having a human experience. It is a journey that I call “ from sleepwalking to open-eyed dreaming.” </h3>Much of the work reflects upon personal themes such as recovery from addiction, self-definition, and recognition of childhood trauma. Then, it expands to issues around truth, denial, resentment, and fear at the personal, provincial, and world levels. I want to give the viewer a look into the chapters of life I experienced in my community, from the Marion Barry years through the epoch of gentrification that took hold in Washington, DC. This offers a more nuanced perspective than many generalizations used to define what has come to be termed “the Black Experience.” Some of my paintings and conceptual assemblages have a slight patina of sarcasm, but I am clear about my hope for humanity. This body of work lays bare the lessons that society has still struggled to master while I continue to question my own programming and socialization. The reality that race, class, and greed are just as much the three-headed juggernaut as it has always been is clear to me. Overall, the works offer a snapshot of what was like, what happened, and what it’s like now. You can’t unring the bell, so what do you do next?"

<h3>ABOUT THE ARTIST</h3>Terence Nicholson is a born Washingtonian and a longtime native of Anacostia. A graduate of the Corcoran School of Art, he received the Rosenbaum Memorial Scholarship Award. Terence has exhibited in three East of the River Art Exhibitions, and his solo show, "Intro-Circumspective," at Willow Street Gallery in DC, received critical acclaim. Terence served as Curator for Honfleur Gallery and the Art Director of Anacostia Arts Center. He currently works as an Exhibit Specialist at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and Katzen Museum of Art in Washington D.C. Terence has recorded and toured worldwide as a composer, producer, and improvisational lyricist with Jazz Saxophonist Steve Coleman, pianist Omar Sosa, and Hip-Hop band, Opus Akoben. He served as a Cultural Envoy for the US State Department in 2005 and 2006 for the American Music Abroad program in Asia, Suriname, Egypt, and the Middle East. Presently, Terence fronts a rock band called Thaylobleu, which performs nationally and most notably opened for the recent resurgence tour of the legendary Detroit punk band, Death. Terence has been a practitioner and teacher of Chinese martial arts for over thirty years and holds over twenty gold medals from national and international tournaments. In 2018, he won the 6th Annual World Kuoshu Tournament. He has taught self-defense and Tai Chi classes for community and professional organizations and businesses, including the World Bank and the White House staff under the Obama administration.
