The Center for Children and Youth—Child Training Institute (CTI) provides in-depth training to social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals who seek knowledge in the latest treatments and techniques to help their young patients.CTI hosts events virtually and at our San Francisco location. Trainings are open to the public and include continuing education credits for qualified participants. Exploring the self-protective system of children affected by complex traumatization.

Overview:Children who've experienced ongoing trauma may face challenges in handling their emotions, understanding their body sensations, and being aware of what's happening around them. They might start seeing their emotions and the world as unsafe. This can lead to developing fears and strong ways of protecting themselves, which can affect therapuetic outcomes. These protective behaviors might include avoidance, control, pleasing, and idealization. This presentation will provide a theoretical and neurobiological framework to understand complex trauma and the self-protective system of children. We'll also share practical strategies from EMDR therapy, play therapy, and Sandtray therapy, to work with entrenched forms of self-protection. We will study interoception, co-regulation, and the co-creation of safety as foundational elements in treating highly defended children. The workshop will also discuss how defenses can be passed down through generations and provide interventions to address the needs of the whole family system.Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:<ul><li>Recite the factors that lead to the formation of trauma related phobias and defensive adaptation.</li><li>Identify the relationship between trauma related phobias, interoception, exteroception and affect regulation in children and the formation of rigid forms of self-protection.</li><li>Identify a wide range of trauma derived mechanisms of protection.</li><li>Utilize Play therapy, part work, Sandtray therapy and EMDR therapy strategies to work with children’s self-protective system.</li><li>Utilize a systemic and relational approach to work with defenses.</li></ul>

About the Trainers:Ana M. Gómez, MC, LPC is the founder and director of the AGATE Institute in Phoenix, AZ. She is a psychotherapist, author, and an international speaker on the use of EMDR therapy with children and adolescents with complex and developmental trauma as well as generational wounds and dissociation. She has led workshops and keynote presentations around the world to thousands of clinicians. Ana is a fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD).Ana is the author of EMDR Therapy and Adjunct Approaches with Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment and Dissociation and several book chapters and articles on the use of EMDR therapy with children and adolescents. In addition, she is the author of multiple children’s books and therapeutic tools. Ana has developed numerous intensive training programs and protocols that include the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol and The Systemic, EMDR- Attachment Informed Program to Heal Intergenerational Trauma &amp; Repair the Parent-Child Attachment Bond. Ana was the recipient of the 2023 “Francine Shapiro Award” from EMDRIA, the 2011 “Distinguished Service Award” from the Arizona Play Therapy Association, and the 2012 Sierra Tucson “Hope Award.”Please Note:CTI knowingly acknowledges that the information presented in the program by Ana Gómez may reference material widely written about by this author but is not intended to promote the sale of her books. Child Training Institute (CTI) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CTI maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The CA BBS recognizes the APA as an approval agency to meet their CE requirements. Disciplines such as social workers and counselors outside of California should check with their respective state board to assure acceptance of APA approved sponsors for CE credits.In order to receive CE credits, participants must purchase a Registration Including CE Credit ticket. Full attendance is required in order to receive CE credits and no partial credit will be offered. Failure to meet this requirement will prohibit the Child Training Institute from issuing a CE certificate and no refund will be provided.Registration and Cancellation:Pre-registration is required. Cancellation requests emailed to the event manager prior to 11:59 pm on Wednesday, 4/10/24, will receive a full refund. No refunds for cancellation requests received on or after 4/11/24 regardless of the cause for cancellation including failure to join the meeting on the day of the training. If the training cannot be held due to circumstances beyond the hosts’ control (natural disaster, strike, fire, severe weather, illness of speaker, speaker cancellation, etc.) the event will be rescheduled, if possible, and the registration fee applied to that date.
