The Broadway Maven is thrilled to return in 2024 with an ALL-NEW, not-to-be-missed, FREE class on Jewish lyricists on Monday, January 29 at Noon ET and repeated at 7:00 pm ET that night. You can attend either class, or both with your registration - there's no restriction! If you’re tickled by the lyrics in a good Broadway song, the odds are good it was written by a Jewish American. We’ll look at (and listen to) the most clever, apt, and stirring lyrics from some of Broadway’s top lyricists of the Jewish persuasion, including: • Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime)• Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast)• Irving Berlin (Annie Get Your Gun)• Mel Brooks (The Producers)• Fred Ebb (Chicago)• Jonathan Larson (Rent)• Frank Loesser (Guys and Dolls)• Stephen Schwartz (Wicked)• Stephen Sondheim (Into the Woods) Why are so many Broadway lyricists Jews? Is there something Jewish about the lyrics we examine? How do great lyrics interact with great music? What’s the role of rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, and wordplay? David Benkof has been teaching Broadway appreciation and Jewish Culture 101 online for more than four years. The author of two books, he holds a master's degree from Stanford in history and taught "in-person" high school and adult education for many years.
