March 11-12, 2024 | Two-day EU Conference | in personThis conference explores ways to make European foreign policy more inclusive and less Euro-centric. After a keynote reflecting on the overall theme on day 1, three academic panels revolve around the question of how to de-center Euro-centric foreign policy prescriptions so to make them more inclusive-participatory and less interventionist. This also entails a critical re-evaluation of existing EU foreign and multilateral policies, especially as it relates to questions of race and migration, gender and sexuality, postcolonial relations, environmental protection and democracy and human rights promotion. Michael Curtis, EU Deputy Ambassador, Delegation of the European Union to the United States in Washington D.C. will deliver the keynote address "EU-US relations and the EU’s foreign policy priorities." The address will provide an overview of EU-US relations and EU foreign policy priorities, reflecting on the ambitions, as well as challenges, of current global EU external relations.

The panel will focus on the concept of de-centering European foreign policies, contrast it to decolonizing approaches, and highlight the ways in which racialized, gendered, sexual, religious, and other diverse populations encounter exclusions and Eurocentric perspectives in European foreign relations. What are the historical, socio-political, and global contexts that led to a need to provincialize and reform existing European foreign policies and practices?

PANEL II: Feminist Foreign Policies – an inclusive way to move beyond Eurocentrism? Feminist foreign policy (FFP), with its focus on gender and human security, peace building, anti-racism, climate justice and international collaboration, originated in Europe, but has gained attention and a following around the world. Can Feminist Foreign Policy, with its holistic yet broad ambitions, be a sustainable way to move beyond paternalistic Euro-centrism in foreign policy making across the world?

Consular Roundtable: National Views on Reimagining & Reforming European Foreign Relations 

Consular Roundtable

This panel focuses on other critical foreign policies that the EU pursues with its member states, and that are important focal points for more inclusive and reflective relations with the Global South: human rights promotion, climate change policies, and European Foreign & Security Policy. How can these be normatively and strategically (re)formulated and reconstructed to do justice to Europe’s historical and contemporary obligations as a powerful actor-especially as those are contested by Europe’s growing far-right forces?
