Words have power - but why? We'll look at the history of powerful words and how we can use words to evoke change.

Why do some words have power? You might be thinking of spells (alohamora, abracadabra, open seseme) or perhaps your thinking of songs or speeches that resonate with people? Throughout the history of the human race we have always given words their own power. We've believed in curses, hexes, blessings and prayers. But why do some words seem to hold so much power so that even a rational character like Macbeth would take the word of a few old ladies in the moors? (Not to discount advice from ladies on moors it could be great - so use your own discression here).In this creative writing session we'll look into language choices when it comes to powerful speeches and touch on both fictional words of power and real speeches that have changed the world (for example, Dr Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I have a dream').Once we've discussed and learnt about words of power we'll have a go at writing some ourselves! We'll be creating fictional scenarios and working together to come up with words of power that may change the minds, hearts and souls of our characters (and maybe of some real people...)As always, you will never be forced to read anything out - this is optional! You can come along and listen and observe, or really get involved and let your inner actor fly free!
