Bronx Memoir Project: Narrative Essay Writing

Founded by visionary community leaders in 1962, The Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is a pioneer in advancing cultural equity in The Bronx. From our early beginnings as a presenter of affordable arts programming in select Bronx neighborhoods, we have grown into a cultural hub that serves the entire creative ecosystem of the borough.  Our programs serve artists, the public, and the field at large by building connections, providing resources, and advocating for equitable practices. Then as now, we focus on supporting the work of underrepresented groups – especially artists of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Through this lens we offer affordable programs for seniors and youth, and provide direct services to over 1,000 artists and 250 community-based arts groups each year.

<p>Led by Caroline Rothstein, Narrative is described as &quot;a spoken or written account of connected events.&quot; As a storytelling device, the narrative essay smooths together and contains experiences, moments, and details in a poetic and prolific way that makes it possible for us to engage deeply with ourselves, our communities, and the world. In this workshop series, we will read and write narrative essays to learn how to locate our unique voices and strengthen our ability to tell stories in concrete and connective ways. New writing will be generated in each session, with opportunities for volunteers to both share and receive feedback, as wanted. </p><p>This first class will address the question ‘ What is Sacred?’ and explore a personalized and collective understanding of what narrative essay is and can do. Writers are asked to consider what is both sacred and sacrificed when we tell stories and write. </p>
