Explore a turbulent era in the history of New York City (and the country as a whole) through surveillance films captured by the New York Police Department (NYPD). The films documents the Civil Rights movement and the end of segregation, the Hard Hat Riots and Vietnam War protest movements.Over the last year, the Municipal Archives at the NYC Department of Records &amp; Information Services has digitized nearly 1,500 surveillance films created by the NYPD during the 1960s and 70s. These films primarily document political activist groups seeking change through protests, acts of civil disobedience, and awareness campaigns. The footage features some of the most well known public figures of the times, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Carter, Pope Paul VI, as well many others. FACILLITATORS Rossy Mendez leads reference services for the Municipal Archives and is the lead processing archivist for the NYPD intelligence records. Her responsibilities include organizing the collection, answering reference questions, and drafting access policies for the records.Christopher Nicols is a film and audiovisual archivist at the Department of Records and Information Services and has been working there for the past two years. He has received degrees in history and humanities from the University of Oregon, focusing on propaganda films made during the Weimar Republic. He graduated from New York University’s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation program in 2017. Outside of the Municipal Archives, he has worked with volunteer organizations such as the Community Archiving Workshop and XFR Collective to preserve audio-visual material in under-served communities.<ul><li>Bring your questions for the Q&amp;A session</li><li>The venue is wheel-chair accessible.
