<A HREF="http://joy-lapps.squarespace.com/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Joy Lapps-Lewis" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Joy Lapps-Lewis</A>, a musician, composer and arts educator, has put together a truly unique evening of music, dance, artistic projection and community. From Skin 2 Steel & Beyond is a multi-disciplinary arts performance that tells the history, development and future of the steelpan. 
 
During the mid to late 1930s, a new melodic percussive instrument, the steelpan (or steel drum), emerged on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Historians have traced the evolution of the instrument from West African percussion instruments including skin drums and connecting it through the creation of tamboo bamboo instruments, to metal and iron beating bands and finally to its current form as steelpan. Its journey to this point has been closely connected to the social, political and economic changes in Trinidad and Tobago.
 
This 60-minute presentation will explore the development and impact of the instrument and feature artists including <A HREF="http://www.esiemensah.com/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Esie Mensah" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Esie Mensah</A>, Tamla Matthews & <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/NgomaEnsemble/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Ngoma Drum and Dance" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ngoma Drum and Dance</A> and musicians including <A HREF="http://larnelllewismusic.com/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Larnell Lewis" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Larnell Lewis</A> (drums) Andrew Stewart(bass), <A HREF="http://www.jeremyledbetter.com/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Jeremy Ledbetter" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jeremy Ledbetter</A>(keyboard), <A HREF="http://robchristianmusic.com/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Rob Christian" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rob Christian</A> (woodwinds) and Chendy Leon (percussion).  Simultaneously we will be hosting a community symposium highlighting businesses and community organizations in Toronto's steelpan music scene.
 
Attending this one of a kind event is FREE, however we do ask that you RSVP. 
 
Refreshments will be available for purchase from 5:30pm.

6:00pm - Doors Open/Community Symposium/Refreshments available
7:30pm - Show Begins and runs for 75mins
9:00pm - Community Sympoisum and Refreshment Sales Continue for 30 mins
