About The Harlem in Havana Project- The Harlem in Havana Project aims to entertain, titillate and educate audiences about the significant role Leon Claxon's traveling show played in shaping Black and Latin entertainment and popular culture in the Jim Crow era. Created by documentarian and artist, Leslie Cunningham, the goal of the project is to revive Harlem in Havana's rich history through a variety of thought-provoking content, including: online presence at harleminhavana.com; a feature documentary film; traveling and online photography exhibits; live performances that honor Harlem in Havana today, and a photography book, Brown Skin Showgirls. This multimedia documentary project aims to engage communities of color in a way they are not being served in the media today. Ultimately, this project is a celebration of our multi-faceted past and a path for the descendants of African-Americans and Latinos to reflect, embrace, and liberate their own stories from historical amnesia. JIG SHOW | Leon Claxton's Harlem in Havana is a feature documentary film by Leslie Cunningham who takes viewers on a personal tour of her grandfather’s famous Black and Cuban traveling revue that birthed music icons, broke carnival records and significantly influenced entertainment and popular culture during the Jim Crow era.
