Online ticket sales end 2 hours prior to the start of the event. Pre-registration is only available online via credit card payment. Tickets may still be purchased at the door using cash, check, or credit card.Late seating is at the discretion of the artist and The Dance Complex, and may not be available after the start time of a performance. In general, we advise arriving at least 15 minutes before the show start time. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show, at which time our bar is open in our lobby space. After the show has begun, entry is not guaranteed and refunds are not available. You may receive a refund through Eventbrite up until 24 hours prior to the event.Our ground-level lobby area and performance space is ADA compliant. Gender-neutral accessible bathrooms are located on both the ground and second-floor levels of the building. There is a motorized lift that can bring one person at a time from the ground floor to the second floor should a guest wish to use it. About Beyond Labels: Latin American Identities and Artistic SpacesBeyond Labels will gather Latin American artists from Greater Boston to share their experiences with racialization upon arrival in the United States, navigating questions on who belongs in Latino spaces, language barriers, and how to make the arts spaces more welcoming to all Latino identities. This discussion will feature Mariana Paes, Jean Appolon, and Valentina Romero, facilitated by Elsa Mosquera-Sterenberg. The event will start with moderator Elsa Mosquera-Sterenberg, board member at The Dance Complex and the co-founder of <a href="https://www.culturalagora.com/" title="https://www.culturalagora.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Agora Cultural Architects</a>, an organization that accelerates the creative ways in which Latinx culture can be seen and enjoyed. Elsa will present a brief context of how Latin American arts have been a part of the community at The Dance Complex and will frame the goal of the conversation to ignite reflections of the multitude of Latino identities and suggestions on how cultural spaces can better engage with this community. This event is part of the Learning to Walk the Talk series. About the participants:Brazilian born Mariana Paes has been instrumental in suggesting this Learning to Walk the Talk and helping develop the areas of inquiry for Beyond Labels. Mariana is the senior advisor and project manager of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Campus Culture and Climate at Berklee College of Music, and part of the Cultural Advisory Team at the Boston Mayor Office for Arts and Culture. Besides her executive roles, she is the creator of the “<a href="https://chroniclesofanallien.substack.com/" title="https://chroniclesofanallien.substack.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Chronicles of an Alien</a>” newsletter about immigrant experiences, and is singer, songwriter, and Flamenco dancer with the Laura Sanchez Flamenco Company. Jean Appolon has been a long-time Teaching Artist at The Dance Complex as well as the founder and artistic director of <a href="https://jeanappolonexpressions.org/" title="https://jeanappolonexpressions.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jean Appolon Expressions (JAE)</a>. He is a successful choreographer and master teacher based in Boston and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Jean has performed with Viviane Gauthier Dance Company and Folkloric Ballet of Haiti in Port-au-Prince as well as Harvard and Radcliffe Dance Program, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Joffrey American Ballet School in the U.S. Valentina Romero is a Latina Indigenous UMass Boston student focused on research regarding Latin American Indigenous identities, decolonization, and Re-Indigenization of Cultural and Academic spaces. She also contributed to the creation of the college’s Native &amp; Indigenous Student Resource Hub, where she serves as a community leader building spaces for Native and Indigenous students and for de-indigenized folks to explore and connect with their indigeneity. This space rejects settler colonial notions of existing as a Native or Indigenous person and is a space for celebration, joy, resistance, education, and liberation . She will speak of the importance of considering Indigenous heritage and amplifying Indigenous identity in diasporic Latinx cultural performances. In addition to her studies, Valentina is part of Laura Sanchez Flamenco Company.
