Music Therapy Research: Updating What We Learned in School (Day 1)

The Music Therapy Spot is a 501(c)(3) organization founded and operated by a team of new professionals who are committed to providing and curating resources aimed towards supporting music therapy students, interns, and new professionals. We aim to foster an environment of learning and exploration that is rooted in interdependence and community care. We believe that learning does not happen in a vacuum and the best way to become the people and therapists we want to be is through the process of learning from and with one another.

Join Barbara Wheeler, PhD, MT-BC in a speaker series discussing basic research skills!

This series will include information about music therapy research, including quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and other types of research. Examples from music therapy research will be included. Participants will have an opportunity to apply basic research skills in planning research studies that they might do. Emphasis will be on actual questions that participants have and research that can be done by clinicians. BIO:Barbara L. Wheeler, PhD, MT-BC, holds the designation of Professor Emeritus from Montclair State University, where she taught from 1975-2000. She initiated the music therapy program at the University of Louisville in 2000, retiring in 2011. She has retired from most professional work but still presents and teaches in the U.S. and internationally. Barbara has been an active clinician throughout her career and worked with a variety of clientele. Barbara edited Music Therapy Handbook, three editions of Music Therapy Research, is coauthor of Clinical Training Guide for the Student Music Therapist, and is the author of numerous other articles and chapters. She is a past president of the American Music Therapy Association. Barbara received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Federation of Music Therapy and from the American Music Therapy Association. *Note: A certificate of attendance can be provided at the conclusion of the workshop, upon request.
