Abstract: Women’s participation in gambling, and their risks of gambling harm are increasingly approximating those of men’s, requiring the development of ‘gendered approaches’ to harm prevention. However, as I will argue in this talk, conceptualization of ‘gender’ and ‘gendered approaches’ within gambling studies remains exceptionally limited. Systemic gender-responsive approaches to health policy and programme design, such as those advocated by WHO and Lancet (i.e. addressing inequitable gender norms, roles, and relations and transforming them) remain largely absent from gambling scholarship. Zooming in on specific examples of emerging women-targeted gambling harm prevention programmes from across European countries, I will reflect on potential theoretical and political economic factors impacting their gender responsiveness. Bio: Daria Ukhova (UoG) is a feminist social scientist with an interdisciplinary background in psychology, gender studies, health policy, and sociology. She currently leads the policy workstream of the Lancet Public Health Commission on Gambling. Prior to returning to academia, Daria held various research and policy roles at Oxfam and WHO.
