New Year's Eve with Oakland Samba Revue

The Sound Room is aptly named. The focus is on the sound or the music. Unlike clubs where the performance may be peripheral to the experience, at the Sound Room the performance is the experience.  We are an all-ages listening room. We exist to present great music and promote jazz as an art form.The Sound Room is the home of Bay Area Jazz & Arts, a  501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on promoting the Arts.

There's a saying that what you do on New Year's Eve (NYE) is what you'll do the rest of the year. Join us for a Special NYE celebration featuring Oakland Samba Revue (OSR) - an 8 piece samba band that will make you happy and joyful. Isn't that what you want for 2024?Formed in the summer of 2019, OSR is a stellar contribution to the San Francisco Bay Area's rich legacy of Brazilian music. Based on the little big band sounds of samba de gafieira, OSR features some of the Bay Area's best jazz and latin jazz musicians including vocalists Catia Machado Lund and Katiana Vilá, Zack Pitt-Smith (reeds), Erik Jekabson, Henry Hung and Ethan Pires (trumpets), Jeff Cressman and Remee Ashley (trombone), Brendan Neutra and Aaron Germain (bass), Dillon Vado and Zach Mondlick (drums). Rooted in acoustic samba, O.S.R. incorporates funk, jazz, forro, bolero and more into its smart and fun arrangements. It's music to dance to, music to listen to.Doors open at 8P. Food will be served approximately 8:15. Music will begin around 9:15P. There WILL be a dance floor!Ticket includes GREAT MUSIC, GREAT FOOD, and a CHAMPAGNE TOAST at MN to ring in 2024.Our NYE menu features dishes that symbolize prosperity, money and progression. Whether these dishes will do all that, is still to be seen. But we do know that it's going to be tasty!Hoppin' John Black Eyed Peas - is thought to bring a prosperous year filled with luck. The peas are symbolic of pennies or coins, and a coin is sometimes added to the pot or left under the dinner bowls.Collard Greens - symbolize the green of “dollar bills,” and will ensure you have a financially prosperous New Year.Cornbread - Representing gold, eating cornbread brings with it the hope of extra spending money in the new year.Sausage and Sauerkraut - Germans have been eating pork and sauerkraut on New Year's for generations because they believe it brings good luck (viel glück in German). According to lore, pork signifies a “moving forward” trajectory in life, and thus is a favorable meat to enjoy to start the year off on the right track. The eastern European tradition of eating cabbage on New Year's—either as a dish or as cabbage rolls—is meant to signify luck, particularly on the financial side of things. Get your dancing shoes on and get ready for some fun &amp; luck!
