A discussion of current policies on gun violence and gun safety with professionals.

Come for an evening of discussion with various professionals dedicated to improving the promoting safety and reducing gun death. Conversations will focus on how we can contribute to reducing gun violence by working with or against current policies.Speakers: Paul S. Appelbaum, MD. is the Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine, and Law, and Director, Center for Law, Ethics, and Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the Consortium for Risk-Based Firearms Policy. He also directs Columbia’s Center for Research on Ethical, Legal, &amp; Social Implications of Psychiatric, Neurologic, &amp; Behavioral Genetics. The author of many articles and books on law and ethics in clinical practice and research, Dr. Appelbaum is a Past President of the American Psychiatric Association and chairs the DSM Steering Committee. A graduate of Columbia College and Harvard Medical School, he has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. David Pucino joined Giffords Law Center as a staff attorney in May 2018. As part of Giffords Law Center’s litigation team, David pursues affirmative litigation and defends laws that enhance firearm safety. He drafts and analyzes legislation to promote federal, state, and local policies designed to prevent gun violence. David also helps manage the Firearms Accountability Counsel Taskforce (FACT), a joint effort by Giffords Law Center, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, and the Brennan Center for Justice, working with the nation’s preeminent law firms to reduce gun violence. Before joining Giffords Law Center, David was a litigation associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &amp; Garrison LLP. David’s practice included securities and employment matters, as well as extensive work with FACT. He was part of a team that challenged the presidential proclamation banning nationals from Muslim-majority nations from traveling to the United States. David holds a BA from Providence College, an AM in English and American Literature from Washington University in St. Louis, and a JD from Columbia Law School. Rebecca Fischer is the Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, Rebecca Fischer leads the only statewide organization that focuses on empowering young people in underserved communities to use their voices to call for action to reduce gun violence, transforming NYAGV and NYAGV Education Fund into a major player in both advocacy and school-based gun violence prevention education.In the 2018 election cycle, Rebecca pushed NYAGV to endorse a new class of leaders -- successfully helping to elect gun violence prevention champions to state and federal office, including the entire class of new members in the State Senate. She has successfully used that newfound influence to help pass a comprehensive package of new gun safety laws and secure funding for gun violence research. Rebecca is also steering NYAGV Education Fund through a major transition, quadrupling the size of its school-based education program—ReACTION—and making NYAGV the premier provider of gun violence prevention education in NYC’s most impacted communities. Following the tragic shooting in Parkland, FL, Rebecca recognized the importance of harnessing the voices of youth of color in the gun violence prevention movement, successfully merging NYAGV with grassroots group Youth Over Guns. She is a respected source in local and national media, having been quoted in The New Yorker, the NY Daily News, the Albany Times Union, NPR, MSNBC, NY1, and Capital Tonight, among others. Patrick Blanchfield, PhD, is an Associate Faculty Member at theBrooklyn Institute for Social Research and a Visiting Scholar at NYU.A freelance journalist, his writing on gun violence, gun control, and gun culture has appeared in dozens of venues including The New YorkTimes, The Nation, Foreign Policy, Dissent, and elsewhere. His book, Gunpower, will be released by Verso Books in Spring 2020. Kevin Petersen is a second year student at Columbia University’s School of General Studies and a U.S. Army veteran of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in Afghanistan. This academic year he also serves as the Veteran Students Representative on General Studies’ Student Council. Additionally, he has published work in The Columbia Daily Spectator, The Columbia Beacon, The Washington Examiner, and The Washington Post.
Moderators:

Alex Clavering is a third-year student at Columbia Law School. Alex led planning and execution for the March For Our Lives demonstration in Manhattan, which brought together several gun violence prevention organizations to protest along with over 175,000 New Yorkers. Alex has worked closely with Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio to combat gun violence and urge legislative action on gun safety. He previously worked as a Policy Analyst with New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, a grassroots organization that operates education
 programs in communities disproportionately impacted by gun violence. Alex was a Legal Investigations Associate at Google, a Fulbright Scholar in Malaysia, and a White House intern during the Obama administration. Currently Alex works as a legal extern with the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem. Alex is pursuing a career in the space of criminal justice and public defense.
Andrea Gonzales is an 18-year-old Radical, Mestiza, Queer activist and advocate for marginalized youth. From the age of 15, she has been fighting for liberation and revolution at the intersection of gender, race and decolonization while centering Black and Brown youth. Andrea was the model in a series of feminist photos with messages denouncing rape culture written on her bare back. After her school removed the photo display, Andrea’s fight to restore the installation gained media attention and she was recognized by the National Coalition Against Censorship. Ultimately, the photos hung in both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the U.S. Capitol. Following those events, Andrea has interned at the Sadie Nash Leadership Project, Girls for Gender Equity, and the Staten Island Youth Justice Center. In these spaces, Andrea has organized, marches, teach-ins and workshops about decolonization, criminal justice reform and police brutality. Following the Parkland shooting, she organized a sign-making event within her school and mobilized students to walkout. In the summer of 2018, Andrea moderated a panel discussion alongside March For Our Lives at the New York stop on its “Road to Change Tour.” She is currently a member of the Young Women’s Advisory Council and the Director of Operations at Youth Over Guns. Andrea lives on Staten Island and is a college student studying Black and Latino Studies.
