It’s Not Just The Cheating, It’s The Lies… A New Framework for Infidelity

A Three-hour CE Event for Mental Health Professionals

What is worse than finding out you’ve been cheated on?Being looked straight in the eye and told it didn’t happen. Secret infidelity has many different manifestations (physical, emotional, exclusively online, etc.) and the boundaries are unique for every coupleship. But nearly all breaches of fidelity have one thing in common: they are secrets - and for good reason. A person who is secretly violating fidelity agreements works to avoid the negative consequences they anticipate would unfold if their partner knew what was going on behind closed doors, on business trips, or while their partner was sleeping. If we take a closer look at the nature of these secrets, we realize how they create significant inequity in committed relationships. When a cheated partner has been restrained from knowing essential information about their own relational reality, they cannot accurately assess their own safety and wellbeing; their agency and ability to consent becomes compromised. When power and control are used to keep one’s intimate partner in the dark, it’s more than just betrayal… it’s betrayal violence. This CE event will address power and control dynamics embedded in instances of infidelity, and will address how those dynamics are pertinent in understanding partnerships as a container for equity and mutuality. Specific focus on aspects of intersectionality within romantic and sexual relationships will be explored, with the goal of equipping clinicians to recognize covert power dynamics, relevant to the identities of all partners in a relationship, and how to assist in helping to develop accountability, restoration of parity, and healing.PresentersKate Balestrieri, Psy.D., CST, <a href="https://www.modernintimacy.com" title="https://www.modernintimacy.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Modern Intimacy</a> and Hope Ray, LPC, <a href="https://www.betrayalviolenceinstitute.com" title="https://www.betrayalviolenceinstitute.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Betrayal Violence Institute</a> This event is for mental health providers only, and qualifies for 3 CEs with AASECT* Learning Objectives:Objective 1: Participants will be able to identify the three forms of simultaneous conduct that constitute betrayal violence (BV) in intimate relationships and the related endangerment risks factors for the victimized partner, in support of:Core Knowledge:<ul><li>Intimacy skills (e.g., social, emotional, sexual) and family dynamics. Sexual exploitation, including sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual assault.</li></ul>Sex Therapy (ST) Training:<ul><li>Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.</li><li>Theory and methods of approach to medical intervention in the evaluation and treatment of psychosexual disorders.</li></ul> Objective 2: Participants will attain fresh, non-pathologizing and intersectional terminology to identify and articulate power and control dynamics related to secret sexual behavior that causes harm in intimate relationships, in support of:Core Knowledge:<ul><li>Range of sexual functioning and behavior, from optimal to problematic</li><li>Sexual exploitation, including sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual assault</li></ul>Sex Therapy (ST) Training:<ul><li>Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.</li><li>Theory and methods of approach to medical intervention in the evaluation and treatment of psychosexual disorders.</li></ul> Objective 3: Participants will learn how to assess power imbalances more readily in romantic and sexual relationships, through the framework of intersectionality, and how to work with partners to prioritize and maintain parity, in support of:Core Knowledge:<ul><li>Intimacy skills (e.g., social, emotional, sexual) and family dynamics.</li><li>Sexual exploitation, including sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual assault.</li></ul>Sexuality Counseling (SC) Training:<ul><li>Theory and methods of different approaches to intervention in relationship systems.</li></ul>Sex Therapy (ST) Training:<ul><li>Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.</li></ul> *This program meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 3 CE credits.
