Be in the room to Celebrate 50+ Years of OWACA service to the community and Honoring Community Heroes.About OWACA "To Christ through Sports"Our earliest program began in the late 1950’s. As organized by the Los Angeles Council of Churches, the Church Welfare Bureau operated a Wilshire Adams Basketball League. At that time, the program was assisted by the Protestant Community Services staff. OWACA spun out as an independently operated program in 1980. Programs conducted by OWACA since that beginning have been coed basketball, volleyball, and primarily basketball. Typically teams included all boys, however, there was an occasional girl included on some teams. Up until the COVID-19 pandemic each year a basketball league was conducted with participants between the ages of 14 and 18. In 2022 a one-day basketball tournament was held at Trinity Baptist Church. We are now developing a basketball league for younger participants."To Christ through Sports"HonoreesDr. Joseph GambrellDr. Joseph Gambrell, MD is a retired pediatrics specialist in Downey, CA and has 51 years of experience. He graduated from HOWARD UNIVERSITY. A community servant, President of Holman United Methodist Men, Adviser, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Mu Sigma Lambda Chapter.Bill HardyLong time community servants, Bill became a member of Holman UMC, under the leadership of Rev. LL White, a church active in social justice/civil rights movements. It was because of his interest in sports that he asked Rev. White if he could renew Holman’s participation in a church basketball league, to which he responded yes. Bill coached youth in OWACA for over 40 years. Many of Holman’s youth, now adults have participated in OWACA, engaging in Christian fellowship through sports. Bill became a member of Holman UMC, under the leadership of Rev. LL White, a church active in social justice/civil rights movements. It was because of his interest in sports that he asked Rev. White if he could renew Holman’s participation in a church basketball league, to which he responded yes. Bill coached youth in OWACA for over 40 years. Many of Holman’s youth, now adults have participated in OWACA, engaging in Christian fellowship through sports.Sandra HardySandra was been a professional nurse for more than 50 years. She served as Director of Surgical Services at Cedars Sinai and Children’s Hospital. Beyond her professional career, as a longtime member of Holman church she’s taught 1-5 Disciple classes, served as Lay and Co-lay Leader, worked with the Jobs for Kids Program, worked with the West LA College Upward Bound Program, served as a member of the Finance Committee, assisted with the Store House Ministry, served as a chairperson on the board of CYFC, and served on the SPPRC. Currently, as an ad-hoc member, she assists in organizational events such as the Christmas gift program.,Trusse Norris, Chairman OWACA, former NFLTrusse is currently the Chairman of the board for Organization of West Adams Christian Athletes (OWACA) serving the community for over fifty years. OWACA has impacted thousands of young people and families in the community. He is also a former professional football player who played with the Los Angeles Chargers.
