Overview of the evolution, the techniques and the strategies of investing on startups. Sharing Seraph’s 15-year experiences and lessons.

Succeeding in investing in high tech startups has always been difficult due to associated risks and uncertainties. The resources required are often beyond the reach of most individuals. But over the last 30 years, angel investors have emerged to be instrumental to the creation of Silicon Valley. While opportunities to find investment are abundant, the challenges have been overwhelming. This event will provide an overview of the evolution, the techniques and the strategies of investing on startups. As an example, the speaker will present Seraph’s 15-year experiences and lessons that work in today's complex investment environment. In addition, the speaker will share how to leverage resources of 300+ investors’ collective wisdoms and resources for deal sourcing and evaluation so as to achieve decent returns. 
Speaker: Tuff Yen
Born and grown up in Taipei, Tuff Yen studied Microbiology and Immunology at UC Berkley. After worked as an engineer for Amgen and Genentech for several years, Tuff received his MBA from University. Thereafter he worked for JP Morgan Venture Capital Department and achieved outstanding investment returns. 
In 2004 Tuff established Seraph Group (www.seraphgroup.net), the largest structured angel fund group in the US. Seraph has managed 8 investment funds, which invested into 100+ early stage companies. 20 portfolio companies that Seraph has exited include Life360 (IPO: 42+ times returns) and those acquired by Apple, Google Apple, EMC, Yahoo, Boston Scientific, etc. The minimum investment amount of Seraph’s fund is USD 250,000. With an average historical IRR of 25+%, Seraph funds invested into various technology sectors such as telecommunication, internet, software, social media, healthcare, biotech, FinTech, modern services, environmental, etc.
Currently there are 300+ heavy weighted investors in 90 cities globally. Seraph achieved 62% investment success rate. Several portfolio companies were awarded “Angel deal of the Year”. Deal sourcing, quality and evaluation are the most important success factors. 60+% deals are referred by 300+ investors of heavy weighted investors of Seraph funds. Heavy weighted investors also participated evaluation of deals. On average only 1.5 deals invested out of every 100 deals evaluated. There are many follow-on investors of dozens of Seraph’s portfolio companies. 
顏家宏先生於臺北出生長大，並於台大就讀，其後到美國加州大學伯克利分校主修微生物學和免疫學。於Amgen 及Genentech工作數年後，顏家宏於1994年於耶魯大學取得MBA學位，其後於JP Morgan創投部門工作，投資報酬表現傑出。2004年，他在美國矽谷創建了Seraph Group (www.seraphgroup.net)，為全美國最大的結構化天使投資集團，至今已管理了8個投資基金，共計投入100多家公司，所投資20家已實現成功退出或部分退出，包括Life360 (IPO: 42+倍)，及為Apple、Google、蘋果、EMC、雅虎、Boston Scientific 等知名企業所收購。Seraph基金最低投資額為25萬美元，歷史平均 IRR年回報率為 25+%。投資領域包括 通訊、航太、互聯網、軟體、新媒體、醫療、生物科技、數位金融、現代服務業、環保。
Seraph管理的投資基金共有重量級頂尖投資者300多位，分佈於全球的90多個重要城市。大中華地區已有三十位投資者，包括多位上市公司董事長。Seraph所投資的數十家公司，多位全球知名投資者跟進投資.
