During the multisensory walk, guided by Taru Niskanen, we explore the city by concentrating on our senses, which are often shut down.

Living in a city can be an overwhelming experience due to constant information overload. To cope in an urban environment, we tend to shut some of our senses down. If we concentrate to study our sensory experiences carefully we might find new interesting or surprising elements from our habitat.What is our experience of the city really like? During the multisensory walk we explore the city by concentrating on our senses: Sight – Hearing – Touch – Smell – Taste. The tour is guided by architect Taru Niskanen. Taru Niskanen (MSc. in Architecture) has worked extensively in architecture from land use planning to building design in Finland and abroad. She is interested in the pedestrian experience and public life in the urban context. Taru Niskanen has been working on her research on sensory mapping during her residency with Finnish Cultural Institute in New York. Currently she works as project architect at Harris-Kjisik Architects and is a PhD candidate and teacher at Aalto University. Recently with her students from Aalto University where she has contributed to various interventions in the urban context in the Philippines and Zanzibar, Tanzania MEETING POINT: The multisensory walk will start from the crossroads of 145th and St. Nicholas avenue at 4pm.
