As a part of CURRENTLA's food and art triennia, Los Angeles Eats Itself presents, SHOOK: The Edible Earthquake, which will explore the ideas, narratives, and themes of disaster preparedness for the 'Big One.' For Los Angeles, the impending quake necessitates intense pragmatic planning and crisis forecasting but what happens from the sunk costs of intense preparation? Could we inadvertently create an actual yearning for this dreaded Armageddon!? Say What?! But perhaps by indulging in the pleasure of primal ‘role play’ we think we will be better prepared for the time when such an event will happen (because it will happen).Fermentation enthusiast and educator, Jessica Wang of Picklé will lead workshop participants in food preservation techniques using seasonal produce, sea salt and vinegar Learn how to stock your pantry with nutrient-dense plant-based preserves and beverages because should the big one strike, why not make it both tasty and nutritious for your gut biome! Jessica will cover how nutritional value of ingredients and the notion of bioavailability of nutrients through microbial metabolism is important both for health and keeping calm during disasters. Samples of fermented pickles will be available for tasting. Fermenters will be able to take home a jar of pickles they prepare during the Workshop. RSVP required, max 15 attendees for each workshop.Jessica Wang is a Chinese American food advocate and entrepreneur who is known locally as a pickling workshop organizer and the creator of the playful pies-to-pickles pop-up concept Pique-Nique L.A. Her work is influenced by art, personal health encounters, and a diverse cultural upbringing – including her teen years spent in Chiang Mai, Thailand. With an academic background in fine art, a decade of professional kitchen experience, and passion for sharing the wonders of fermentation and mindful living, Ms. Wang has naturally grown into a host of creative educational pickling and cooking experiences. She currently is the creator of Picklé, a seasonally-inspired and community-driven educational workshop series she hosts in Los Angeles.
