Filmmakers Natalie Hill &amp; Adele Bertei in Person!)The Philosophical Research Society proudly welcomes producer and directors Natalie Hill and Adele Bertei for a very special screening of MADE IN TRINIDAD, their barely seen, incredible documentary on Trinidad’s Carnival celebrations. Produced in 2001, their film toured the festival circuit to acclaim, but did not receive distribution – a casualty of the early aughts film industry’s unfortunate indifference towards ethnographic filmmaking. Now, twenty-two years later, PRS is excited to share a rare screening of this wonderful film!Providing an in-depth look at Trinidad's hedonistic annual Carnival celebrations, Hill and Bertei’s film looks closely at how the syncretic origins of the Mas(querade) continue to evolve as resistance, ritual, celebration, and ecstatic communion. Although officially celebrated on the traditional Catholic calendar as the pre-Lenten week before Ash Wednesday, Trinidadians prepare throughout the year to engage in competitions of music, storytelling, and costuming. Shot in the years 2000 and 2001, the filmmakers cover behind-the-scenes work-fêtes to explore how the Mas is both personal and communal, a year-long process infiltrating every part of daily life. Carnival catharsis begins with J'ouvert, a 'dirty mas' ritual where social roles are reversed and norms about desired behavior in the ordinary world are completely suspended. Sharp interviews and lush footage from Carnivals past and present reveal the face beneath the mask of colonialism — kaleidoscopic in its expressions of manifold heavens and hells. About the filmmakers:ADELE BERTEI was a founding member of musical insurrectionists the Contortions, and personal assistant to Brian Eno. Bertei was lead singer for the Bloods, the first out, queer, all women-rock band. She has appeared in several indie films, most notably in Lizzie Borden’s Born in Flames, and MOMA has acquired films of Bertei reading her poetry in 1978 (The Ragazzi Manifesto) and The Offenders, a feature where she plays the lead. As a vocalist she has toured with, written songs for, and recorded vocals for artists as diverse as Tears for Fears, Thomas Dolby, Sandra Bernhard, Culture Club, Scritti Politti, Whitney Houston, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Sheena Easton, Oleta Adams, Lydia Lunch, the Pointer Sisters, Matthew Sweet, and Sophie B. Hawkins. Her first story "1970" was published in the compilation The New F**k You: Adventures in Lesbian Reading by editor Eileen Myles, and she is the author of Peter and the Wolves (Smog Veil), Why Labelle Matters (University of Texas Press) and Twist: Tales of a Queer Girlhood (ZE Books). Natalie began her film career as production manager on the award-winning documentary, Paris is Burning. Her credits include executive producer for the feature film Arthur Newman, starring Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, directed by Dante Ariola. In 2007, Ariola and Natalie won the DGA award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials. She has produced commercials for Steven Klein, Rupert Sanders, Ava DuVernay and Steve Ayson, among many others. Films she’s produced: Seed: A Love Story for Lifetime Television, To the Curb directed by Tamra Davis, Sam, Again by Lucas Spaulding, and Made in Trinidad, a documentary Executive Produced by Sigurjon Sighvatsson. Natalie produced June 1968 for artist/director Phillipe Parreno, lensed by Darius Khondji. The film ran at the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Serpentine Gallery in London.
