Málþing um möguleikana sem opnast með stafrænum menningararfi og hvernig nýta má leikjahönnun og tækni tölvuleikja til að miðla sögunni.

Undanfarin ár hefur orðið hröð þróun í gerð stafrænna lausna sem nýtast við varðveislu og miðlun menningararfs. Með margvíslegum hætti er nú hægt að búa til stafræna tvíbura af minjum og munum sem koma menningararfinum á stafrænt og sjónrænt form. Á málþinginu verður m.a. rætt um hvernig slíkar endurgerðir nýtast til rannsókna, miðlunar, sköpunar og sýndarferðalaga.Sérstakur gestur málþingsins er Erik Champion, prófessor við háskólann í Adelaide í Ástralíu, sem hefur rannsakað og skrifað um möguleika stafræns menningararfs um árabil. Hann leiddi um skeið vinnu UNESCO um hvernig mætti miðla og varðveita menningararf með sjónrænum lausnum og afrakstur þeirra vinnu er m.a. bókin <a href="https://www.ubiquitypress.com/site/books/e/10.5334/bck/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Virtual Heritage: A Guide</a> sem kom út árið 2021.Á málþinginu verða einnig erindi um íslensk verkefni sem veita innsýn í þá möguleika sem skapast með stafrænum lausnum. Í fyrsta lagi um samstarfsverkefni EFLU og Safns Einars Jónssonar um stafrænar styttur. Í öðru lagi um samstarf fyrirtækisins Parity við Þjóðminjasafnið og fleiri söfn um stafræna nýtingu á safngripum í tölvuleiknum Island of Winds. Og í þriðja lagi um þróun og uppsetningu Gagarín á blönduðum veruleika (XR) utandyra á Þingvöllum og Hofsstöðum.Málþingið er haldið í samvinnu Gunnarsstofnunar og Miðstöðvar stafrænna hugvísinda og lista. Þessir aðilar taka saman þátt í DACCHE rannsóknarverkefninu, sem styrkt er að Norðurslóðaáætlun ESB og er málþingið hluti af dagskrá verkefnisins.Málþingið fer fram á ensku. Digital twins of remains and artefacts can now been created in multiple ways to visualize the heritage. The seminar will focus on how such digital heritage can be utilized for research, communication, creation and virtual tourism.Erik Champion, professor at Adelaide University in Australia, is the guest of honor at the seminar. He has done a lot af research and writing about the opportunities that digitising cultural heritage brings. In the years 2016-2020 he was UNESCO Chair of Cultural Heritage and Visualisation. He edited the book Virtual Heritage: A Guide (Ubiquity, 2021) and Assassin's Creed in the Classroom (Springer, expected 2024). His recent books are Playing With The Past: Into The Future (Springer 2023), Rethinking Virtual Places (Indiana University Press, 2021), Critical Gaming: Interactive History and Virtual Heritage for Routledge’s Digital Research in the Arts and Humanities Series, and Playing with the Past (Springer, 2011). He also wrote Organic Design in Twentieth-Century Nordic Architecture (Routledge, 2019).Three presentations of Icelandic digital heritage projects will be at the seminar. Firstly about a collaborative project between a sculptor museum and a consulting engeering company to make digital twins of statues. Secondly from a gaming company that has in collaboration with museum recreated artefacts digitally to use in the video game Island of Winds. And thirdly from Gagarin Interactive about the XR experiences that they have designed for Thingvellir and Hofsstadir.The seminar is organised by Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute and The Centre for Digital Humanities and Arts. It s a part of the DACCHE-project which is funded by the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme. The seminar will be in English. This talk will examine how key challenges in digital heritage involving 3D models could be brought to life and re-opened to interpretation by game design, and how game-like interaction could also help increase the richness and immersive qualities of XR (extended reality) and virtual tourism. Can 3D models, the scholarly information surrounding them, and the involvement of the public be brought closer together? And can we harness the speed and complexity of new technologies to ensure both the data and our understanding of that data can be recorded, interpreted, and shared more fairly, openly, and democratically? Erik Champion has been a game design teacher, a heritage visualization expert, and architectural historian (of Nordic modernism!) He is currently an Enterprise Fellow at the University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia. From 2016-2020 he was UNESCO Chair of Cultural Heritage and Visualisation at Curtin University.

Linking Digital Heritage, Games and Virtual Tourism

I will do a short overview of the journey of an item from 1400-1600 being found in the 19th century, ending up in the National Museum of Iceland. Where it became a part of the museum's main exhibition for 20 years. In 2023 the item was 3D scanned and gained a new life and purpose within the computer game Island of Winds. In the game there will also be a museum where the item will be on display. But is there a difference between the corporeal museum and the digital one? Guðrún Þóra has dedicated her studies to art, design and cultural studies. She graduated from the art division of her Icelandic matriculation examination, studied art theory and folkloristics in the University of Iceland. Later she graduated RADE with a diploma in multimedia design. She also studied Graphic Design in the Marbella Design Academy and holds BA as a Graphic designer from the University of Hertfordshire. UI designer and 2d animator at Parity for the last 5 years.

From a Folktale to a Modern Tale

Digital statues (stafrænar styttur) is a collaborative project between the Einar Jónsson museum and EFLA Consulting engineers in Iceland. It received support from “Barnamenningarsjóður” (children´s culture fund) and “List fyrir alla” (art for everyone). The purpose of the project is to bring the Einar Jónsson museum to schoolchildren in a digital form, regardless of their location. This was done by creating exact digital twins of a large number of Einar´s works using photogrammetry and other scanning techniques. The museum has also prepared studyguides that teachers can use free of charge. Bio Þröstur Thor Bragason works as a new media specialist and is a partner at EFLA Consulting Engineers in Iceland. He has a M.Sc, degree in Medialogy from Aalborg University in Copenhagen and an A.Sc. In Computer animation from Full Sail University in Florida. Þröstur started getting interested in digital twins around 2006 while finishing his M.Sc.

Digital Statues

Gagarin Interactive has developed XR experiences for several cultural heritage projects in Iceland. Two specific outdoors sites, Thingvellir and Hofsstaðir in Garðabær, where visitors can look into the past are highlighted in this talk. Each site has a different approach for technology used to create the XR experiences. Sunna Mogensen is a 3D Artist at Gagarin Interactive who was leading the content creation for both projects and will give you an insight into the decision making process along the way. She will expand on the use of drone footage for 3D mapping the area, content recordings, and even some AI used in the process.
